Christmas Reading!

Christmas holiday reading for you - consider the Harry Potter Series, or books by Justin D’Ath, and The Farthing Wood Collection. You might like to read a few books by the same author, try Clair Zorn, or Glenda Millard or David Baldacci.

Take Three Girls joint authors: Cath Crowley, Simmone Howell & Fiona Wood.  All three girls are targeted by PSST, a toxic website that deals in gossip and lies.  St Hilda’s antidote to cyber-bullying is to make all year 10’s attend the Wellness Program.  That’s fine, but sometimes all it takes to fix the problem is three girls.  This book explores friendship, feminism, identity and belonging.  It is raw, honest and funny. (Review taken from Pan Macmillan Australia 6/6/18)

In the Dark Spaces by Cally Black.  Meet Tamara, she’s 14 and faced with an impossible choice when she falls for her kidnappers.  Tamara has been living on a star freighter in deep space.  Her kidnappers are terrifying Crowpeople – the only aliens humanity has ever encountered.  No one has ever survived a Crowpeople attack, until now.  But survival will come at a price.  There is no handbook for this hostage crisis.  As Tamara gets to know the Crowpeople, and the threats they face from humanity’s exploration into deep space, she realizes she has a choice to make.

Because of You by Pip Harry.  Tiny is 18 years old and living on the streets in Sydney.  She is running from her small-town past.  Hope Lane provides short-term accommodation.  It’s a shelter for the homeless.  Here, Tiny meets Nola, a high school student volunteer on placement.  Both girls share their love of words through the Hope Lane writing group.  This story speaks for those in our communities who are voiceless.  It shares a message of empathy and hope.

The Secret Science of Magic by Melissa Keil.  Sophia is smart, like genius smart but sometimes no amount of genius can prepare you for real life.  When reality hits, and things don’t go to plan, how does she make sense of it all?

Joshua spends hours practicing magic tricks and trying to figure how to win Sophia’s heart.  But when your best trick is to make schoolwork disappear, how can you possibly romance a genius?  In life and love, timing is everything.

Ballad for a mad girl by Vikki Wakefield.  Everyone knows 17 year old Grace Foley is a bit mad.  Her only fear is losing.  Two schools are feuding and Graces accepts a dangerous challenge.  Soon after she experiences something she cannot explain and it’s not funny.  Grace is drawn into a 20 year mystery of missing girl Hannah Holt and begins to have difficulty deciphering what is real or imagined.  This is an enthralling story written by a Young Adult Australian writer.
