Phonics at St Brendan’s

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read and write by blending and segmenting individual sounds.

At St Brendan’s, we use a Multisensory Structured Language approach to the teaching of reading in the Junior classes. MSL is an explicit direct instructional approach to the teaching of alphabet sound.

The multisensory aspect ensures that links are consistently being made between the visual (language we see), auditory (language we hear), and kinesthetic-tactile (language symbols we feel or make through gestures) pathways in learning to read and spell.
