Dance

Written by Phill Haddad

It's been a crazy couple of weeks here in the dance studio, but everyone has been hitting every class and rehearsal with 100% energy, focus and determination!                                                                                                                                        PREPS and YEAR ONES                                            We have recently been using dance to work on shapes and formations through the choreography given creating different patterns for the students to recognise. Squares, triangles, circles to the left and right are some of the shapes we covered. In doing this we also worked on memory and changing the sequence, using the same shapes and dance combinations to mix the order around challenging students to remember the various instructions given. This also covered directions, spacial awareness and highlighted again the difference between the right and left sides.                                                                                                We covered body percussions and rhythm patterns creating a beat and melody. We worked on a stomp sequence which covered identifying different parts of the body, levels and height differences, opposite sides of the body eg left hand working with the right knee, and worked combinations to identify these more so! The students also used vocals to help remember the order of set movements and combinations while completing the task! Everyone did an amazing job and had a lot of fun in the process.

YEAR 7's                                                                           The year 7's have been working hard towards their set out task of a combined routine over the last couple of weeks. We started a routine where the first part of the choreography was set out for the students, and the class had to combine their ideas, concepts, and creativity to complete the other half as a team.                                                                                                                        This prompted students to jump out of their comfort zones and be risk takers communicating ideas and problem solving, while embracing the suggestions put forward by one another. They provided feedback to each other on how to improve and enhance what they were creating. This also taught the students about mathematics and how this important subject crosses over in so many ways in an element such as dance. Formations, timing, counts, transitions, shapes, and how odd and even numbers can play a big role in setting up various positions in the routine.  We also reflected back on a live performance from the musical HAMILTON and they discovered, identified and discussed the various elements that we spoke about in class that they saw on stage, and the impact and power it has!

Victorian State School Spectacular                  Our amazing VSSS students have been rehearsing all the routines set out for this years big showcase in September. We have our next combined schools Hub rehearsal coming up on the 29th March, and everyone has been training outside of school also to make sure they've learnt all that's been set. This years routines are another step up again from last year bringing a fun energetic vibe which all of the students love dancing to!                                     The dancers are committed to two rehearsals a week at the moment and are making the absolute most out of every minute we have. Proud of their dedication and efforts and they look forward to representing Saltwater and hitting the big stage soon!
