Music

Written by Michael Lapina

You know when things are getting very busy and frantic within the Music Classroom when you realise it has been two weeks since we last created our Music Newsletter..

Primary School Music

Our Years Four, Five and Six students have been having a great time in the Music Classroom.  The students have now covered the Rhythmic Pyramid and are able to not only read and demonstrate rhythmic patterns, but they are now able to write and identify rhythmic patterns when it is being demonstrated (ie through rhythmic dictation).

The students have also explored the Musical Staff, recognising and identifying each note when it is written either on a space or line of the Staff, and being able to locate those notes on the keyboards.  This extended to combining the notes to create chords and triads, and playing the chords in a sequence (or chord progression) to form a song.

Secondary School Music

Our Year Seven students have spent the last two weeks establishing the foundations of music through:

  • Musical notations on the treble staff
  • Exploring Rhythmic patterns on the drums
  • Notes of the Piano keyboard
  • The Major scale, highlighting the interval differences between Tones and Semitones
  • Chords and Triads
  • The Circle of Fifths and its applications in composition and songs

In the coming weeks, the students will continue to analyse various songs, and exploring how the Circle of Fifths was applied to each song.  The students will also commence their compositions, using the Circle of Fifths as the basis of their original songs.  This project will take them to the end of the Term, where they will present their compositions.

Vocal Extensions and VSSS Mass Choir

Our Vocal Extension (VoX) and VSSS Mass Choir students continue to meet weekly.  Our repertoire for the VSSS has not yet been sent to us.  We expect this in the coming weeks.  However, our VoX students have continued providing their talents to preparing the songs of the upcoming School Musical "Aladdin".

School Choir

Our School Choirs (both Timetable A and Timetable B) continue to meet on a Friday lunchtime to prepare the song that they will be singing at our final Whole School Assembly in the last week of Term One.  The song we have chosen is a well-known piece, but we will keep it a surprise for everyone until our performance, which will include some Auslan Sign Language as part of the song.

It is so inspiring to see our students commit to attending our Choir every week.
