Robotics

Written by Gemma Fowler

Year Six students have continued to work in teams to assemble their robotic arms. They have shown a great deal of resilience and persistence as they have worked hard to complete this complex task. They have made mistakes, identified errors and made corrections. Many teams have already had success with making the robotic arm move by running code, while other teams are in the final stages of assembly.

Communication, encouragement, cooperation and organisation have been key to these activities, allowing students to develop the soft skills that will be sought by their future employers.

Year Five students are exploring coding as a means of making animation. Students have practised using screen capture tools on their devices to capture images sourced online. They have put series of images together in a sequence. They have then used forever loops in Scratch to create a digital flip book.

It has been fantastic to see some students extend themselves by adding sounds and backdrops to their animation. Some students have even created their own digital artwork to create highly original mini-movies, such as this work by Mia from 5F.

Coming soon… Arduino kits

A variety of electronics components, breadboards and microcontrollers will soon arrive at Saltwater College. These will be made into electronics kits which students will be able to borrow for home use.

Students who wish to extend their learning outside of school will be able to undertake self-paced activities to learn to code Arduinos. The Arduino for Beginners course will be comprised of three levels of projects, with a certificate awarded upon completion of all projects. There will also be an Advanced Arduino course, with five levels of activities for students to complete.
