Year Three News

Written by the Year Three Team

Dear Year Three Families and Guardians,

The Year Three students have been working hard in class learning new concepts in all areas of learning. Students are continuing to produce high quality pieces of work and engage in all lessons. The Year Three teachers are so proud of the attitudes of all students. Well done to the Year Three’s.

Reading

In Reading, students have continued to learn about the reading strategy of QAR (Question Answer Response). Students have learnt how search through a text to find multiple pieces of information to answer “think and search” questions. Students have asked and answered "think and search” questions during independent reading time to practise this reading skill.

Writing

In Writing, students have continued to explore the writing genre of persuasive texts. Students learnt about the persuasive techniques of;

  • Emotive language
  • Rhetorical question
  • Facts or Statistics
  • Inclusive language
  • Repetition
  • Bribery and Bartering

Students have used these techniques in their writing to persuade the reader of their opinion on a topic. Students have also revised the structure of a persuasive text. The structure of a persuasive text includes:

  • Title
  • Introduction
  • 3 arguments
  • Conclusion

The Year Three’s have been busy writing persuasive texts on a range of topics linked to the texts we have been reading in class and our Unit of Inquiry on ‘Rule and Laws’.

Maths

In Maths, students have been learning about whole number. The Year Three’s have learnt how to;

  • Identify an odd and even number
  • Order and sequence two-, three- and four-digit numbers using ascending and descending order
  • Represent a number using standard form, written words, expanded form, place value charts, pictures and visual maths tools

Students have applied this learning of whole number to addition. Students have learnt to add numbers using a variety of mental and written strategies such as the split strategy and vertical strategy.

Inquiry

Students have begun their new unit of Inquiry under the central idea ‘Rules and Laws contribute to developing a more productive society’. Students have unpacked the transdisciplinary theme of ‘Who We Are’ that connects to our central idea. The Year Three’s have created their questions and wonderings based on our unit of Inquiry. Students will spend the next few weeks investigating and researching some of the following questions

  • What is a rule?
  • What is a law?
  • What is the difference between a rule and law?
  • What do rules and laws look like in different places we visit?
  • What is the purpose of rules and laws?
  • How do laws impact our society?

The Year Three’s look forward to sharing our findings with you in the next few weeks.

Kind regards,

Year Three Teaching Team
