Dear Year Two Families,
The students in Year Two have been extremely busy with their learning and we can’t wait to tell you all about it!
Reading
In Reading, the students have been exploring how visualising can help them become better readers by creating a picture in their mind when they are listening or reading a text. They discussed how adjectives and descriptive language help them form a clearer, more vivid image in their minds. The students had to listen carefully to a text being read by their teacher; they then had to draw the picture they created in their minds on paper, ensuring they were paying attention to the descriptive words and include them in their illustration. Weekly guided reading sessions have also been happening in the classroom where your child is working on their individual reading goal, with support from their teacher.
Writing
In Writing, the Year Two students are underway with their first writing unit on poetry and have been exploring our 5 senses and how this can be turned into a poem. They listened to the mentor text, ‘Day at the Beach’ by Tom Booth and discussed with their peers what would they have seen at the beach, heard, felt, smelt, and tasted, based off their 5 senses. They then had to pick a topic of choice (setting, thing, or activity) and create a ‘seed’ in their writer’s notebook outlining the 5 senses associated with that topic. Then the students began writing their 5 senses poem in their writing book based off the topic they chose. This was a great activity as it allowed the students to be creative and have fun with it.
Maths
In Maths, the students have been revising what is place value and why is it important to understand it. To show their understanding of place value, the students used MAB blocks to represent different 3-digit numbers. The Year Twos also made their own MAB robots. In Maths they have also been exploring the concept of regrouping and expanded form to help them work out hard sums.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, the Year Two students have been unpacking the 5 dimensions of health and delving deeper into what each dimension means and represents. The past few weeks, they explored the physical, social, mental, and emotional dimensions and have just begun looking at what spiritual health means. The students understood that spiritual health comes with needing to know what each individual person values. Tthe students displayed the attribute of being reflective by thinking about what they value in their lives. They also started looking into researching a specific domain of ‘health’ that was interesting to them.
Reminders:
Kind Regards,
The Year Two Team
