NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing

This year, the NAPLAN Online test window is 10 to 20 May. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 may participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents/caregivers and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. Most schools in South Australia will undertake testing online, however, all Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper. There are contingency measures to revert to paper testing if required.

Preparing for NAPLAN

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already learnt through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance.

Public demonstration site

In advance of taking NAPLAN Online, students, teachers and parents are invited to use the public demonstration tests to familiarise themselves with the type of questions and related functionalities available in the NAPLAN Online assessment (accessible via: https://nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site).

Some of the key features include a range of question types, onscreen tools, timers and interactive navigation. Students are encouraged to try all the tests for their year level to practise the complete range of question formats available in the online assessment.

Year 3 students at Para Vista participated in the National Coordinated Practice test during Week 8, where the school's ICT capabilities were checked and students were able to become familiar with the NAPLAN online platform. Year 5 students will be given the same opportunity before NAPLAN next term (Tuesday - Friday Week 2 and catchup in Week 3).

If you have any questions about NAPLAN or your child's participation, please call the school and speak with Beth Dorsman.
