Kitchen Garden

Kitchen Garden Learning   Term 1 – Year 5/6 C and 4A

Vicki and I have just completed our first Kitchen Garden unit of 2022 with Year 4s and 5/6s. We have been so impressed with the student’s teamwork skills and enthusiasm the last four weeks and congratulate them on their work together. This term our focus ingredient was milk. We used some of our school’s summer garden produce accompany our dishes.

Enjoy reading a selection of student’s responses as part of learning reflections on the program:

‘I am going to share with my family all about the different kinds of milk you can use that can make your food taste different and how easily we can make ricotta and labneh.’  Aya 5/6 C

I learnt that there are so many different types of animal and plant milks so if you don’t like cow’s milk there are always others. I learnt that moose milk when made into cheese is the most expensive cheese in the world. Audrey  5/6 C

I enjoyed working in the kitchen as it made me feel excited and important. I liked watching the milk drain from the yogurt. It was cool. In the garden I learnt about animals which pollinate the flowers and attract other wildlife like birds which will help the garden thrive. I liked cleaning out the garden shed and being a leader in this job.  Edie 5/6 C

I enjoyed learning about the history of milk. I found out that Cleopatra bathed in donkey’s milk and that people still do this today. I found out that Somalia and Kenya have some of the very best camel’s milk.   Sahad 5/6 C

This term I enjoyed making the spinach and ricotta triangles the most because I was a forker (pressed a pattern on the edges of the party with a fork) and I was complimented for my forking. I was proud of my new skills in the kitchen. Arden 5/6 C

I really enjoyed making labneh as because the roles to make the labneh were fun. The flavour was the best bit. I enjoyed the opportunity to try different milks. I found out that my flavour pallet didn’t really adapt to the soybean milk or the oat milk. I enjoyed the garden pest trap engineering and the garden planning because they were fun. Manning 5/6C

I loved making the labneh because when it came out it was like a squishy ball of whipped cream. I have been looking in the shops to try and find all the different types of milk we have been learning about. Clementine 5/6 C

I loved making the ricotta and spinach triangles and jam with whipped cream.  Ayub 4A

I think the garden is cool as you do planting like the sunflowers. Amir 4A

I liked how we all cooperated and weren’t complaining and we all worked hard together. Abdul 4A

I loved watering plants in the garden and making traps for the snails. Rama 4A

At FPS we have started collecting all our school’s fruit and vegetable scraps to feed our worms. Each week different worm farm helpers bring the scraps over with Robbie to feed our worms. The worms are very happy !
