ENGLISH

During Term One the Year Five & Six classes are covering many aspects of the English curriculum. Below is a break down of what our students are being taught during the school day.

READING

At Upwey South P.S. we use the Readers Workshop model to guide our reading sessions. Throughout the year we have a reading focus linking to the three Fountas Pinnell areas : Thinking Within the Text, Thinking About the Text and Thinking Beyond the Text. During Term one we are targeting the area of Thinking Within the Text, by having a weekly focus. To date we have covered asking Questions, making Predictions, identifying different Reactions and Visualising what they hear and read. Continuing on through the term we will cover: making Connections (text to self, text to text and text to world), making Inferences, Summarising the text, finding the Main Idea and identifying New Learning.

WRITING

During Term One, the writing is aimed towards Non-fiction and Persuasive text development. Building the students stamina is our focus at the present moment, through engagement and ownership of writing ideas. Students are capturing personal and previous experiences, fictional thoughts and imaginative story ideas to write with increasing strength and depth. During these sessions we have been embedding small grammar lessons which have started with the parts of speech: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, proper nouns, pronouns, conjunctions and prepositions. Through Word Attack sessions, students are learning about subordinate clauses and how the inclusion of these adds greater detail and depth to a sentence. Students have produced some very pleasing pieces of writing during a short period of time.

SPEAKING AND LISTENING

Whether your child has chosen to nominate themselves for a school leadership position or they have chosen to listen to the speeches, all students have engaged in positive Speaking and Listening experiences. In the coming weeks students will participate in a number of occasions that will allow them to gain further confidence in speaking in front of an audience.

Spend some time scrolling through the photos below and witness the great work we are all doing in 5/6A, 5/6B and 5/6C.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

During Week Four, our students have had the opportunity to nominate for many different leadership roles. On Monday we heard speeches from our students who nominated themselves for the House Leaders for Mulga, Coolibah, Wattle and Waratah. On Tuesday speeches were delivered for our School Wide Positive Behaviour for Learning and Wednesday was Junior School Council representatives. Through the week students handed in their written speech for the specialist leaders for Visual Arts, Performing Arts. Japanese and Information Technology.

The final roles and responsibilities will be announced during week 5. Parents will be notified by the Year Five & Six teachers.
