What a busy few weeks we have had in PE!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:  Over the past fortnight, the Foundation Students have focused predominately on understanding how their body can perform different movements while undertaking an activity. Some the activities which they participated in were Scarecrow Tag, Bean Bag Relay and Whistle Freeze. The movements which we concentrated on were skipping, hopping on a single leg, kangaroo hops and marching.

Year One/Two: Over the past two weeks, the Level 1 and 2 students participated in a two week Football Clinic run by staff of AFL Victoria. During these sessions, the students focused on some of the key skills involved with the game e.g. Marking, Gathering, Handballing and Kicking. The students participated in small scale games to apply the learned skills. These games also had a cooperative component to them and it was fantastic to see how well the children worked together.

The students should be very proud of the level of Respect they demonstrated towards the coaches during each session.

Year Three/Four: Over the last two weeks, our Level 5 and 6 students have participated in lessons which involved invasion gameplay skill measurement.

The students were all exposed to the game Thief which is played on a basketball sized court. Students worked in teams to invade the opposition’s space and had to avoid being tagged. Their job from there was to steal the opposition’s bean bag and return it to their end to try and score a point. The honesty that was on display was fantastic to see which reflected the student’s ability to play the game respectfully.

During our skill testing lesson, students had the opportunity to measure various skills which are attached to games they may or may not play on the weekends. The skills measured were, Dribbling (left and right hand), vertical jump, kicking (left and right foot), and tennis racquet/ball juggle.

Year Five/Six: Over the last two weeks, our Level 5 and 6 students have participated in lessons which involved collaborative team play and skill measurement.

The collaborative sessions saw students work together to strategise to help them gain a competitive edge over their opposition. The games that took place in this lesson were Line them up and Hand Tennis. To see the students work so respectfully together was exceptional

District Swimming: It was very welcoming by all students, parents and teachers to have our first District Sport Event in twelve months.

Twenty-six students represented Upwey South at the District Swimming Carnival at Belgrave Outdoor Pool on February 18.

As I say every year, the students should be commended on the way they conducted themselves over the course of the day. Their level of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience was at a very high level.

I am super proud of each student who participated on the day and congratulate them all on their efforts in their events.

We had some fantastic results across the day which is reflected below in the image below with nearly all of our students holding a ribbon. Unfortunately not everyone can progress through to the next stage but we have eighteen students representing our school at the Division Carnival on March 2nd. I wish all of these students the best of luck.
