WELCOME TO TERM 2! 

LITERACY

READING

This term, Level 1 students will continue to develop their reading and comprehension skills. We will revise all of the reading strategies (i.e. Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake, Flippy Dolphin) to help students decipher unknown vocabulary. Students will also further develop their comprehension skills with a particular focus on making connections (text to self, text to text and text to world). Students will also learn about analysing a text and how to identify the main idea.

WRITING

In Term 2, students will continue to develop their understanding and use of different types of punctuation marks and word types (including verbs and adjectives). 

Students will create short procedural texts that show emerging use of appropriate text structure, sentence-level grammar, word choice, spelling, punctuation. They will also learn how to write using descriptive language in information reports.

Spelling: In Term 2, Level 1 students will continue working through the Jolly Phonics and Grammar Program. During spelling, we will pay particular attention to short and long vowels and double letter digraphs. Our grammar focus will be nouns and verbs and how they are used in writing.

Week 2: ff as in cliff and verbs

Week 3: ll as in ball and conjugating verbs/past tense

Week 4: zz as in buzz and plurals

Week 5: ck as in duck and pronouns

Week 6: y as in sill  and initial blends

Week 7: short and long vowels and ‘a or an’

Week 8: 'bossy e'

Numeracy 

This term we delve into addition and subtraction. Students will be able to use the addition/subtraction strategies such as counting on, counting back, 10’s facts, using doubles/near doubles, skip counting and partitioning to solve simple addition and subtraction problems. We will make models, write number sentences and read & solve worded problems. 

We will also be learning about time, focussing on reading and making times on analogue clocks to the hour and half hour. Towards the end of term we will be investigating location and being able to give directions to get from one location to another.

Week 3: Addition strategies (partitioning and tens facts) and Time (to the hour)

Week 4: Addition strategies (doubles and near doubles) and Time (to the hour)

Week 5: Addition strategies (build to ten), relationship between addition and subtraction and Time (to the half hour)

Week 6: Subtraction (counting back) and Time (to the half hour)

Week 7: Subtraction (difference between) and Location

Week 8: Subtraction (backwards 10s facts) and Location

Week 9: Subtraction (skip strategy) and Location

INQUIRY - Tiptoe Through Our World

Our inquiry topic this term is Tiptoe Through Our World – a Sustainability unit that explores ways we can take responsibility to look after our environment so that it is preserved for future generations. Students will learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle as they consider the importance of sustainability. They will conduct an experiment to see how long things take to decompose and will develop personal sustainability goals as they consider the ethics of sustainability.

 

Essential Questions:

  • How can we leave a tiny footprint on the environment?
  • Do we know what we can reuse, reduce and recycle?
  • How can we set goals and influence others to look after our environment?
