Focus on Applied Learning

By Mitchell Coombs

It has been an incredibly busy start to the year in the Applied Learning space.  Our students have been embarking on a variety of different courses which they’re lucky enough to be exposed to at Kyabram P-12 College.

Our VET Building and Construction, Engineering and Automotive are continuing to go from strength to strength and prepare our students for a transition into industry through real-life, workplace relevant learning.  These VET courses have been joined by VET Agriculture which has been offered for the first time this year.  These students have been able to be introduced to common workplace responsibilities and tasks in the industry and have just been on the first of many excursions around the local area and various farms.

In addition to this, our students completing their Certificate II in Public Safety (Firefighting Operations) have commenced their studies and are enjoying the relevance of what they are learning and using firefighting equipment.

These courses have been complemented this year through the introduction of a childcare ‘taster’ program with Partners in Training where our students will be working closely with the childcare at KCLC.

For our VCAL students finishing up their studies and those beginning the VCE Vocational Major work, a variety of interesting projects are underway, allowing students to pursue their interests as well as develop the skills necessary to make the transition into the workforce.  Additionally, they’ve been lucky enough to be advised on interview techniques by the CCLLEN who also helped give the students practical experience through mock interviews with local, respected business people.  They have continued their work in the ‘School Grounds Café’ (much to the acclaim of staff!) and begun to be exposed to a variety of worksites and industries in their trip to the Costerfield gold mine.

The busy start to the year will only continue, as we have some amazing opportunities coming up, including white card and first aid training, the Tongala Industry Day, a trip to KyValley Farms and Dairy trip, Anglicare to come and talk about budgeting and responsible gambling as well as various industry tours.

The amazing progress of some of our 2022 VCAL students was also recently recognised in the CCLLEN VET awards.

Our revitalised Year 10 Applied Learning program has started with a bang, with students really enjoying their start to ‘Project Ready’ which is a Certificate II in Active Volunteering, designed to expose students to the community and develop the necessary employability skills to be successful in the workforce.

Our junior and middle school technology students have been able to develop their skills and knowledge in a huge breadth of areas, exploring areas as diverse as woodwork, metalwork, systems electrical, small engines, foods, textiles and digitech, with the latter being able to take advantage of the investment last year in our ‘makerspace’, working on laser cutters, CNC machines and 3d printers.

There is no doubt that as exciting and action-filled as the start of 2023 has been, it is only the beginning and this year is only going to go from strength to strength in the Applied Learning area.
