Messages from our Learning Levels...

Prep

Dates to Remember:

  • Friday, 4th August: 100 Days of Prep Celebration
  • Friday August 18th: Prep Fizz Kids In-Visit

Reminders:

100 Days of Prep Celebration

A friendly reminder of 100 Days of Prep Celebrations will take place on Friday 5th August 2022. The celebrations will occur at school with various 100-themed activities planned throughout a normal school day.  We cannot wait to see the students' unique 100-themed t-shirt on the day.

Eating in Prep

At South Melbourne Primary School we understand the importance of providing students adequate time to eat at both Recess and Lunch.

We understand that each child is different and may require different supports during this time, including friendly reminders from teachers or even support on what to eat first. Thus, we encourage any parents who are concerned about eating to reach out to their child’s classroom teacher to discuss this further.

PE Days

A reminder that PE falls on the following days for our Prep classes:

ClassDay
Prep A - Miss MakThursday
Prep B - Mr JamesTuesday
Prep C - Mr BenThursday

Students should come to school wearing their full sports uniform on their respective PE day.

Attendance / Lateness

As we approach the colder months, we know that naturally students will become unwell. We ask if your child is unwell that you email your child's classroom teacher and log the absences / lateness on Compass.

Year 1

Dates to Remember:

  • Monday July 31st: Scienceworks Excursion

Reminders:

Swimming:

Next week, please ensure that your child wears their PE uniform throughout the entire week. To prepare them for a successful swimming experience, we recommend practicing changing in and out of their swimming clothes while wearing the PE uniform over the weekend. This will boost their confidence and help them become faster in the process, as changing quickly at the pool is necessary.

We kindly request your support in packing their swimming bag with essential items, including a towel, goggles, underwear to change into after swimming, and a spare bag (e.g., a shopping bag) for wet swimming clothes. It is essential to label all their belongings to ensure they can be returned if misplaced.

Scienceworks:

Thank you to all the parents who have offered to help out with our visit to Scienceworks. Please make sure you give your consent so that your child to attend. You need to do this via Compass. If you require any help, please email your child's classroom teacher.

Year 2

Dates to Remember:

  • Tuesday August 1st: TwistED Science
  • Monday August 28th: A Bright Idea In-Visit

Reminders:

TwistED Science:

This excursion will only be for half the day, so your child will still need to bring their school bag, iPad, diary and lunchbox to school. To make it easier for them to carry their snacks, please ensure that they have all their snacks in one lunchbox only with a drink bottle.

We would appreciate your support in making sure that your child arrives promptly at 8:45am, as the cohort will be leaving at 9:00am via coaches.

If you have any further questions, please email your child’s teacher. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing the exciting learning your child will engage with at TwistedEd Science.

Swimming Week 3:

PE uniform will need to be worn all week.

To set your child up for success, it may be worth practising changing in and out of their swimming clothes while wearing their PE uniform over the weekend. This will give them confidence and hopefully speed up the process for them, as this will need to be completed quickly at the pool.

We would greatly appreciate your support with making sure that their swimming bag is packed with a towel, goggles, underwear to change in to and a spare bag e.g. shopping bag for wet swimming clothes. Also, all belongings will need to be named, so they can be returned if misplaced.

We look forward to the fun experience of swimming and seeing your child's skills develop in the pool.

Reading Comprehension

We are working hard in Year 4 to ensure that students are comprehending what they read. You can assist with this at home by discussing with your child what they have read each night. You may ask questions such as:

  • Can you summarise what you read today?
  • What was your favourite part of what you read today and why?
  • Did anything funny in your book happen today?
  • What do you predict is going to happen next? Why do you think that?

Children in Year 4 should be reading for 30 minutes a night. This should be recorded in their diary and signed by a parent or guardian. Teachers will check student diaries each Friday.
