Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education

Aboriginal Education Committee Parent Meeting
We warmly invite parents, carers and families to attend an Aboriginal Education Committee Meeting on Wednesday, 9 November 2022 at 4.00pm in the school library. This will be an opportunity to continue our collaborative refresh of the school Reconciliation Action Plan and discuss Aboriginal Education at Oak Flats Public School. All are welcome to attend, and we are looking forward to continuing to work together. We are very pleased to announce a number of activities being offered to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous students this term. Information regarding specific activities will be shared via Enews and Facebook.

Aboriginal Perspectives in Stage 3
Stage 3 engage in yarning circles each morning which allow all students to have their say in a safe space without judgement. We talk about things we did on the weekend or afternoons as well as topics of interest to share about ourselves. Each student is encouraged to speak, one at a time, without interruption. We practise deep listening skills, share knowledge and show respect to each other.
Stage 3 has also been learning about contact and non-contact forces. We have been learning that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples discovered forces and used this knowledge to play many games like 'Kai', 'Gurril Boodthul' and 'Wimberoo'. Students enjoyed playing the game 'Kai' which was modified and enjoyed by all.
