Diabetes

Diabetes is a health condition that affects the amount of sugar in our blood. Insulin is a hormone that is used to control how much sugar enters our blood. In diabetes, insulin is either not made or it does not work effectively. In some cases, diabetes is a result of both. People with type 2 diabetes often need to take medication or extra insulin to help control the amount of sugar in their blood. With increasing rates of type 2 diabetes in Central Australia, we have designed a 4 week school program to help educate and familiarise students on all things diabetes. We want them to know what can happen to our body when sugars stay too high and help them to make healthy choices as we are particularly concerned about rising rates of diabetes in youth.

Diabetes is everybody’s business, if we don’t have it ourselves we are likely to know someone who has it. There is no shame around diabetes, just support to come and get the right help.
