School Council Report

Although the weather would tell us otherwise, it is in fact summer, and we have reached the end of our fifth year as Beaumaris Secondary College!

2022 saw the return of onsite learning and I know I speak for many when I say that this has been a huge benefit to many students and teachers alike. We have also been able to benefit hugely from the extension to the Learning Centre, which has enabled our students and teachers access to the incredible new education facilities. On behalf of School Council, I would like to thank Principal Debby Chaves, the leadership team, all our teachers and support staff, the State Government, the Department of Education, the architects, Clarke Hopkins Clarke and Built Environs, for what is a truly remarkable learning space for the College.

From a School Council perspective, during 2022 we have continued to lobby to improve the safety of our students as they travel to and from Beaumaris Secondary College. Cycling is now a safer option for our students, with the introduction of clearways on Reserve Road at key times during the day. We will continue discussions about a similar initiative on Balcombe Road in 2023, as well pushing for the 40 km/h speed limit zones of local schools to be joined to avoid confusion and a road safety camera to improve safety for everyone. Among many other matters, School Council has spent the year ensuring our curriculum, camps, events, buildings, grounds, and financial matters are all overseen appropriately, with the necessary governance measures in place. I would like to thank all councilors, including the teachers, student representatives, parents' association representatives and our partners at the MCC, for their hard work and dedication in all these areas.

There were so many highlights during the year that it's impossible to mention some without leaving others out, so I will simply say it was an amazing year of achievement for our College. When our new Year 7 cohort joins us in late January 2023, for the first time, we will have all six year levels learning at Beaumaris Secondary College. This will also be the first time that has happened in Beaumaris for 35 years, since Beaumaris High School ceased operations as a standalone school; an incredible landmark both for our new school and for the entirety of our local community.

On behalf of the School Council, I would like to wish you all a safe and happy festive holiday period, and we look forward to welcoming all our teachers, support staff, students and families back to the College in 2023.
