Chado – The Way of Tea

Recently the Year 10 Japanese class took part in a matcha tea ceremony (茶道) session. The Japanese tea ceremony is known as Chado or Sado, which translates to “The Way of Tea.”

The lesson began by using our chopstick skills to pass around a plate of mochi, whilst showing respect to our peers throughout the process. It was a fun challenge to try and pick up the mochi with the singular chopstick! This was then followed by tasting the matcha tea made by Yamane Sensei.

We then had the opportunity to make the Matcha ourselves. This process included using a chawan (Matcha bowl) with a chasen (bamboo whisk). After scooping the matcha powder into the chawan with a chashaku (small bamboo ladle) we began whisking the matcha powder with the chasen and we were then able to make the perfect consistency for the tea.

Overall, Chado lesson was a great way to end the term and show respect to our peers! Thanks Sensei!
