Indonesian update

Selamat datang!

That means ‘Welcome!’ and it is our theme for this week in Indonesian classes. The Year 5/6 classes discussed what makes us feel welcome and how we can be welcoming to others. One great way to be welcoming is to try speaking a person’s language and seeing as Indonesia is one of our closest neighbouring countries, that makes us good neighbours too.

Here’s a link to help you pronounce ‘Selamat datang’. It literally means ‘safe arrival’ and you’ll see it written on the sign at the front of the school, along with the Kulin Nations’ greeting ‘Wominjeka’. In this video, Wurundjeri woman, Mandy Nicholson, teaches you how to pronounce ‘Wominjeka’ and explains its literal meaning.

Do you or members of your family speak a language other than English? I would love to collect recordings of ‘Welcome’ in all our school families’ languages. If you would like to take part, please contact me at deryn.mansell@education.vic.gov.au or come to see me at school on a Tuesday or Thursday.

Sampai jumpa,

Bu Deryn
