Best of Luck for the Australian School Championships!

The Australian School Championships (ASC) is a national schools basketball tournament for the best schools across Australia to compete against each other over a week-long tournament. This year, the ASC will be held on the Gold Coast at Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre and begins on Sunday, November 27 with round-robin matches occurring all week and a day of finals on Friday for those fortunate enough to make it through the group stage.

Following two years of COVID disruptions, the team of Girton students have been unable to follow-up their championship winning performance in 2019 and are looking forward to their return to the tournament. They have been training for the past term multiple times per week and rounded off their preparation with a match against the teachers and some students this week. The teacher team, consisting of Mr Shaun McCarthy, Mr Ben Furphy, Mr Marcus Smalley, Mr Blake McConville, Mr Dean Norris, Zayden Lockwood (11 Aherne) and Declan Delaney (11 Jenkin) were determined to challenge the ASC team in their match. The first ten minutes of the match were electric, with high pressure defence causing disruptions to the ASC offence, resulting in multiple steals and a huge dunk from Zayden. However, the teacher team ran out of steam (oddly) and were outplayed by the ASC team who justified their selection to the tournament.

We would like to thank the teachers involved in the game for their time and energy in helping to prepare the students for the tournament. A special thank you to Declan and Zayden for their ongoing commitment to trainings to assist with the team’s preparation. Finally, on behalf of the Girton community, we would like to wish the below students well in their endeavours in Queensland and we hope you represent the school with pride.

The team selected consists of:
