Bears with Lawyers Essay

By Eliot Pascoe

Bears with lawyers is a short story by Shaun Tan about how evil the human race is. I believe this story is very fascinating as it talks about some of the most pressing problems with the human population over the past 10,000 or so years. I also think this piece of text is beautiful as it opens the eyes of anyone who reads it to the harsh reality of the modern world and the gruelling problems of our planet. In this text I shall be further talking about what Shaun Tan had as his message over three paragraphs.

First of all, in the story humans are oblivious to nature and seem to not know of its existence and are amazed when shown it. If you look in the text in paragraph ten it says: “It was humbling, beautiful, indisputable and horrifying; it was all those things”. It's showing how humans instead of focusing on the great things of life focus on power and money. This tells the reader how humans have evolved to not see nature but themselves.

Halfway into the story the humans realise they are in the wrong but continue trying to win the case knowing they would lose. This shows how persistent humans are even when we know we are in the wrong. You can see in the text as in paragraph 15 the humans try their best mining every technicality and loophole to no avail. And in paragraph 18 the humans say that deep in their hearts they knew the bears were right. In this part of the text the humans have to reflect on all the horrible things they had done making this part of the story feel really powerful.

At the end of the text the humans (when realising they had lost) shot the bears. I feel this shows how when humans lose something instead of just moving on and dealing with it they destroy the problem with brute force. And while we think this solves the problem it actually makes it worse as guilt swallows us alive before we run into the problem again over and over. This part of the story really shows all the problems with the human race and sums the story up really nicely.

I believe that Shaun Tan made this text beautifully, taking care with every stroke of his pencil. And I think this paid o as this one of the best pieces of writing I've ever read in my life. The message is very smart and the writing is beautiful.

BEARS WITH LAWYERS

Written by Ines Arnautović 5/6O 2022

Bears with lawyers is a short story written by Shaun Tan in 2018. The message that the author is trying to convey is that humans are selfish and greedy. They don’t take care of the planet and aren’t aware of their surroundings. The humans believe that the sun revolves around them and that no one else is worthy of their time. The story explains that even when the humans know they are in the wrong they keep fighting.

Humans know nothing about Bear Laws. This shows the reader that humans are oblivious to nature. In fact they know nothing about any other laws. This story opens your eyes to how ignorant humans are to the most urgent and pressing problems of the world. When the bears come barging in they ask that the humans listen to what they have to say. But the humans replied with, “we do not recognise so called bear law.” The humans were so silly that they didn’t even realise that they were quite low in the cosmic hierarchy (the law system). The humans are actually below walruses and in most cases the beat law took precedence. This shows just how blind humans are: “the fact that we didn’t know any of this only seemed to strengthen the bear's case at the expense of our own.”

The bears had proven themselves, and the humans knew they were wrong. “Deep in our hearts we knew they were right.” But they kept going. The humans were just too proud. They offered the bears money but it was not enough. “Your money is meaningless to us.” Said the bears. The humans couldn’t believe it. What could be more valuable than money?

The humans had dug themselves into a deep hole, so deep that they couldn’t climb out. The humans couldn’t think of a better or easier way than violence. “So we shot the bears.” is a metaphor of the solutions that humans can’t think up. The quote “our debt was severe beyond reckoning” proves how over the years human behaviour has only gotten worse. Throughout history humans have had a pattern of using violence to solve problems.

In conclusion the message that the author is trying to get across is that humans are selfish, ignorant and couldn’t care less about the world around them. As a growing population we should be aware of what happened. I think by reading the story you think about the world and us humans in a new way.

Bears With Lawyers

Sophie Barclay 5/6O

Short story Bears With Lawyers written by Shaun Tan in 2018 is

about bears that are suing humankind. They are suing humans because of all their selfish acts towards each other and nature which shows us how humans are careless.

Bears With Lawyers talks about how humans are ignorant and selfish, so the bears are suing humankind for all of the things/crimes humans have committed. In paragraph 1, it mentions that the Bears have human lawyers so the bears can “walk freely through the city without being shot”.

On page 2, paragraph 5, the bears are talking about all of the crimes humans have committed towards each other for example, “theft” “slavery” and “murder” and even some unheard of crimes such as, “spiritual execution” and “groaking” which also shows how terrible humans act, and this is the Bears proof for suing all humans.

On the second last page, the humans show that they can’t do anything but kill the bears. Which they do. The humans tried to give the Bears money, but the Bears said “your money is meaningless to us.” This truly shows how selfish humans are, so stupid that they have to kill the bears just so they can win. After they shoot the bears, they hear the cattle come.

In summary, Bears with lawyers shows the reader that humans are ignorant and selfish. We know this because of all of the terrible things and crimes they have committed. The final paragraph tells us that the humans killed the Bears so they can

win. The overall message of this text is that humans are destroying nature.

Cyber safety at CNPS

On Wednesday, the Year 3/4 and the Year 5/6 cohorts had a visit from the Evolve Education group discussing cyber safety. By the end of the week all student from Years 3 to 6 will come home with an information booklet that also contains tips and hints for parents and carers.
