Principal's Report

By Frank Catalano

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

Welcome to the final newsletter for the 2022 school year! As with the end of all school years, for me it is always a real challenge to comprehend “where the year has gone?” Nevertheless, I think we should all be incredibly proud of our school’s achievements as the children have had a great year of learning, growing, achieving and succeeding as indicated in the various internal and external assessment measures.

Junior School Chess Team

2022 has certainly been a very successful year for our school chess teams which culminated in the Northern Star Junior (Years Prep to Three) final on the 29th of November. After another gruelling day of high-level games, I am thrilled to report that our team placed second in the state which is a phenomenal achievement and something to be incredibly proud of too!

Thank you and well done to the following children for representing our school:

  • Year 1: Naveen, Samuel and Ethan
  • Year 2: Saheli, Amaya, Lesara and Aadyah
  • Year 3: Reyan, Yehara and Sarvang

Although this was a team event, congratulations to the following children who were acknowledged for their individual achievements:

  • Naveen – Year 1 Silver award
  • Saheli – Year 2 Top Player Trophy and
  • Amaya – Year 2 Bronze award.

Once again, well done to all the children who represented our school in the various tournaments throughout the year as your commitment, efforts and resilience has been simply outstanding! Also, a sincere thank you to all of the parents who have assisted the children as your efforts are also appreciated immensely particularly Chamal and Himath who coordinated and coached the teams. Well done everyone!

Congratulations to Mrs Carter and her family

I am thrilled to report that Mrs Carter has announced the safe arrival of baby Kiki. She sent the following message and photos for everyone:

We are so incredibly happy to introduce you to our beautiful baby girl KiKi Lily Carter! Born at 00:50am on the 5/12/22

KiKi is a French name meaning double happiness and she sure is already living up to her name!

We can’t believe how much we love her already!

Congratulations Cherie, Ethan and the entire family. We look forward to meeting Kiki shortly!

Congratulations to the following children

As written on numerous occasions, it is always a sheer delight to see children succeed with their learning and passions outside of school. Recently Arena and Hirun (both in Year 5) achieved the following:

  • Arena (Golf) – competed in the Eastern Metropolitan Primary Schools event where she placed 1st and then competed in the School Sports Victoria (all primary) event and placed 3rd. Well done and congratulations Arena as this is an amazing achievement, we look forward to your continued success next year!  Further to this, Arena was also nominated and received a medal for the 2022 Monash Rotary Sporting Attitudes Award.

Arena’s long list of achievements throughout 2022 vindicate her passion for golf and also substantiate her hard work and successes.

  • Hirun (athletics) – recently competed in a relay competition where he placed 2nd in the mixed relay and 3rd in the boy’s event. From this point the teams have qualified for the state final which is scheduled for February 2023. Well done and congratulations Hirun as it is fabulous to see your athletic ability continuing to develop – we all look forward to hearing all about your achievements next year as well!

Congratulations to Mith

Mith (Year 6) is passionate about helping others and in order to continue with this he has decided to become a Junior Member of the Country Fire Authority. Below is an email he sent Ms. Krsteska and I:

Hi Mr Catalano and Ms Krsteska

Hope you are well. I am feeling very glad and satisfied to share that I have become a CFA Junior Volunteer.

In September, I was thinking about how I wouldn't be able to continue showing my strength or being a caring person since I wouldn't have much time to serve as Peer Mediation Captain. I was thinking about how I could serve the community in the future years. And then I enrolled as a volunteer at Country Fire Authority (CFA). After couple of months of training, I have finally been offered a position last week. Please find attached my offer letter and some photos taken during my training.

Mith, it is quite obvious that you are a very special individual! Congratulations on being an outstanding Peer Mediation Captain as I am very confident that you will be an outstanding Junior Member of the CFA, they are lucky to have you just as we have been lucky to have you as one of our inspirational learners!

Fun Run Update

Wow, what a fabulous day we all had last Wednesday when we were finally able to host our much anticipated Fun Run! It was absolutely amazing to see the children have so much fun as they circumnavigated the course whilst being ‘colour bombed’ by the parent volunteers and staff. To say it was a huge success is an understatement!

May I take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who assisted on the day and who were able to attend and enjoy the festivities too. Also a sincere thank you and well done to Mrs. Kaur (School Council President), Mrs. Anderson, Ms. Sparkes, Mr Parker and Mrs Garzberg-Grant for their outstanding organisation and to the numerous students who helped out across the day – well done and thank you everyone!

As a school we have raised approximately $53,000 which is an amazing achievement, this coupled with School Council’s generosity, has enabled us to order sufficient new drinking troughs for the entire school. I am pleased to announce these have now arrived and will be installed early in 2023.

The children’s prizes have also been delivered and distributed.

Once again, well done and thank you everyone!

Community Support

As mentioned on numerous occasions, the manner in which the children are willing to support others is incredible as evidenced by the following initiatives:

  • Congratulations to Eliana, Sophie, Neha and Sanuri - The children decided to raise additional funds for the Salvation Army Christmas appeal. As a result of their efforts, our school raised a further $200 which was used to purchase additional non-perishable items for the Salvation Army’s appeal. Well done children!

  • Congratulations to Swanya, Hiyara, Shaya, Manuthi, Gianna, Hunar and Hansigar – who began creating Christmas cards and ornaments during the September holidays for the purpose of selling them to raise additional funds for our school’s Hardship Fund. I am thrilled to report that the children raised $417.65  which will be used to support families throughout our school with such things as attending excursions, incursions, camps and assisting with school fees and uniform. Once again, well done children as your efforts are appreciated immensely!

Student Reports

As a learning community it is extremely important that we value the children’s reports as they are a means of celebrating how much the children have grown socially, emotionally and academically throughout the year. The teaching staff have been working extremely hard to ensure your child’s report accurately reflects their current level of achievement and also their growth throughout the year.

The Semester Two student reports will be distributed via Compass on Friday 16th December.

Please ensure you have access to Compass and if you need any assistance, see Daniel, Daria or Julie in the main office. Also, if you have any queries regarding your child’s report please see your child’s classroom teacher, Mr Lewis, Mr Welsh or myself. Families are most welcome to arrange a time to meet with their child’s teacher if you would like to discuss the report.

As the end of the school year draws closer, we will be saying goodbye to a few students who are moving out of the area. We wish them all the best in their new schools and hope that they keep in close contact with their Glen Waverley Primary School friends for many years to come.

We are also saying goodbye to some of our staff who will be working in other schools. Naturally we thank you for being part of the Glen Waverley PS community, strongly encourage you to keep in contact and sincerely wish you well with your future endeavours.

In closing,

I would like to bid a fond farewell to our fabulous team of Year 6 students. This year the Year 6 students have set a fine example and have led the school with a true sense of commitment, sincerity and pride. I am absolutely thrilled with the leadership of all our Year 6 students particularly our 2022 School Captains Tiana, Nevin, Nimmer and Daivik who all must be congratulated for their outstanding leadership commitment, endeavour and qualities. I look forward to seeing and hearing all about the Year 6 students’ successes as they progress through their secondary education and beyond.

I would also like to wish every Year 6 student the very best in the years ahead and remind them that “once you are a part of the Glen Waverley PS family, you are always a part of the Glen Waverley PS family”. I strongly encourage all of you to come back and visit us!

Also, a sincere thank you to our wonderful team of parents who have helped with many and varied events and programs throughout the year. On behalf of the staff, I would like to thank every single parent for their support, assistance and encouragement as we have made our way through the year.

Team spirit, trust, loyalty and integrity are part of what makes Glen Waverley such a fabulous school.  It is great, that our parents are willing to support their children, the staff and the professional judgements that are made to ensure that our school provides the very best learning environment for their children. As you know our team of staff certainly give their heart and soul to their job and their passion for education is evident. I would like to thank the numerous parents who provide us with support and feedback and for also realising that at times our job is not easy.   We have a fabulous school community who are generous with the time and effort they give to nurturing, assisting and encouraging all that we do at Glen Waverley.

Naturally it would be rather remiss of me not to mention our extremely hard-working staff. The teachers and support staff at Glen Waverley are relentless in their quest to make our school the best school possible. Thank you one and all!
