'OrmonFest' Film Festival Winners
Congratulations to the 2013 ‘OrmonFest’ winners. All Year 5/6 students worked in groups to make short films to present at a special film evening held at the end of Term 2. The team comprising Liam Taffe, Lara Van Zyl, Jessica Ponsford, Miles Sellenger, Dylan Wedgwood and Alex Enever worked together to create, script and film their two-minute film on hand held digital devices. In this case they used a handheld digital video camera. Their short film entitled: ‘5 Steps to Survive School’ was chosen by the viewing audience as the top film for this year’s inaugural festival.

Library News
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michelle and Lina for looking after the Library for me while I was on leave. They did an amazing job collecting books and returning your borrowed books onto the shelves keeping the Library tidy and orderly.
Scholastic Book Catalogues will be sent home with the next newsletter. This is the last catalogue for 2013 so kids, save up your pocket money parents, what a great opportunity for Christmas shopping ideas. The school receives bonuses with book sales, allowing us to purchase resources for the library and literacy program at Ormond Primary School.

Year 2 Critical and Creative Thinking
In Year 2 we have been looking at thinking tools to generate and evaluate knowledge, ideas and possibilities.
Each week in Term 4 we select from a range of thinking strategies which can be adapted and transferred to new contexts. We have been using inquiry based approaches to plan and organise our own learning to become confident and autonomous learners and thinkers.
This week we looked at the ATTRIBUTE LISTING ORGANISER which encourages us to think at different levels and is an excellent strategy to help us organise information on a particular topic.
Our goals were to improve thinking and reasoning skills, to understand the processes involved in making a decision and to improve skills in working collaboratively with a group.

Level 2 'Under the Sea'
Year 1 and 2 students will embark on a journey through the under currents in their exploration of all things ‘Under the Sea’ this term, as part of their integrated studies. Students will have the opportunity to learn about Sea Mammals, Crustaceans, Fish, Molluscs and Sharks and as well as pursue any individual questions they may want to uncover throughout the term.
Students will make a trip to the Melbourne Aquarium later in the term as well as a day trip to Rickets point to celebrate the topic. Parents will also be invited to attend a showcase of students work on a topic of their choice. All dates will be forwarded on in the coming weeks.

Environment Team Update
Food Scrap Wednesday
The Environment Team is very excited to announce our new sustainability initiative. Every Wednesday morning each Class will be given a bucket which is to be used to collect food scraps. This includes leftover fruit, vegetables and bread. Please ensure there is no meat or cheese placed into the buckets. They will be collected after lunch each Wednesday and added to the compost bin and worm farms we have now set up. The compost will then be used to help the Vegetable, Indigenous and surrounding gardens to help them grow.
Vegetable Garden
The Environment Team has been working with a group of Year 1 students to revive the vegetable garden beds which are located behind the portables. We have planted lettuces, snow peas, carrots, celery, beetroot and silverbeet. Every Friday we weed and water the gardens and love checking on the progress of our veggies. Our lettuces are starting to look really healthy and we have even been able to pick and eat a few snow peas! We are looking forward to our compost bin and worm farms getting under way to create organic feed to help our vegetables grow.

Music 'Count us In'
On Thursday 31st October our school is registered as one of over 2,000 schools to learn, rehearse and then perform the song that stops the nation. Students right across the country have been busy learning Keep On, the uplifting tune penned by four talented students, mentored by Katie Noonan and John Foreman. This song will be sung by all at 12:30pm.
Many students have indicated they would like to practise the song at home so here is a YouTube clip which has the song and lyrics. Happy singing!
