ANZAC

ANZAC Day

Last week Lalor Secondary College staff and students participated in an ANZAC Day commemorative ceremony to remember both the fallen soldiers and soldiers currently on active duty for our country.

The students of 9H also took some time to visit the Shrine of Remembrance and participate in a ceremony where a wreath was laid on behalf of the staff and students of our college. We thank everyone who participated in both ceremonies.

LEST WE FORGET.

9H Attends Melbourne Legacy’s 88th ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students

On Wednesday 3 April students from 9H, accompanied by Miss D’Alton & Ms Petrovska attended the ANZAC Commemoration Service along with approximately 5,000 students from schools across Victoria.  This was part of the High Potential Learning Program.

The event was a moving experience where students learnt about the relevance of ANZAC and war commemoration today.  This related to the Humanities study of Australia’s experience in World War One.  The students heard speeches from Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC. Governor of Victoria, and Hugh Roberton, Melbourne Legacy President.

There was a wreath laying ceremony which saw Nicholas Challis and Niki Sangas have the opportunity to represent Lalor Secondary College in laying a wreath on behalf of the school along with other school’s representatives.

Reflections from the day considered the following questions:

  • How does Australia honour and remember those who have served their country?
  • How has technology changed the nature of warfare?
  • How did Rosemary come to represent Remembrance?
  • What is the role Legacy plays in assisting families of the Australian Defence Force?

The students caught the train in to Flinders Street Station and then walked up to the Shrine of Remembrance.  Following the service the students and staff enjoyed lunch at Southgate.  It was a fantastic day to end Term 1 and lead-in to a well-earned holiday.  Term 2 will see all Year 9 students embark on an assignment based on their studies of World War One that will include elements of research, analysis, writing and creative expression.
