Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical JR.

MEET THE LEADS

Name and Year LevelHazel Symonds, Year 9
CharacterMatilda Wormwood
Why did you audition for Matilda Jr?Matilda is a role that I’ve wanted to play since I was 8 years old. It’s been one of my goals to play this role. I think it’ll be a great learning experience, and it’s just going to be a lot of fun. I’ve also always had a love for musicals. Performing in musicals is something I aspire to do professionally, so being involved in musicals now and learning the skills needed is good preparation.
What is your favourite thing about the character you play?I love Matilda’s tenacity and curiosity. She’s so inquisitive and just confident in what she wants.
Why should people come and see the show? Why not? There’s no reason not to see Matilda! It’s a show that people of all ages will love, and there are so many positive messages you can take away from seeing it.

Name and Year LevelAleisha Hoyle, Year 10
CharacterMiss Agatha Trunchball
Why did you audition for Matilda Jr?I wanted to try something different. I’ve been involved in a lot of productions outside of school, so I wanted to try doing one here. I also think it’s a great opportunity to perform in a different venue, as I usually perform at the MAC.
What is your favourite thing about the character you play?Being the evil character. I just love the idea of becoming someone I’m definitely not (as I like to think I’m nothing like Miss Trunchball!) It also gives me a different view of the show as I’m looking at it with a different personality. I also like working one on one with my scene partners instead of in a big ensemble group because it allows me to form relationships with people I’ve never really spoken to before.
Why should people come and see the show?Because it’s the best! It’s going to be the best school production in a very long time! And it’s something different than what we’ve done before.

Name and Year LevelLilliana Bertalli, Year 8
CharacterMiss Jennifer Honey
Why did you audition for ‘Matilda Jr?’I just thought that it would be fun and it would be a good experience for me.
What is your favourite thing about the character you play?I like that Miss Honey is really sweet around the kids and then around Miss Trunchball, she’s shy. It’s just real that you can have a different personality around your friends compared to how you act around people you feel threatened by or unsure of.
Why should people come and see the show? It’s going to be fun to watch. It’ll keep you entertained, and it makes you see that not every school is good, but you can make it good.

Name and Year LevelConnor Burns, Year 11
CharacterMr Harry Wormwood
Why did you audition for ‘Matilda Jr?’I wanted to be involved in the school musical, as the previous one was canceled due to covid.
What is your favourite thing about the character you play?Mr Wormwood is a very funny character to play, and using a different accent is cool. He’s also really dramatic, which is fun.
Why should people come and see the show? One, because the school hasn’t done a musical in a really long time. Two, because the cast has worked incredibly hard to put it on. And three, to support local theatre.

Name and Year LevelAnastasia Mercieca, Year 8
CharacterMrs Zinnia Wormwood
Why did you audition for ‘Matilda Jr?’Mrs Gigg told me I should, so I did.
What is your favourite thing about the character you play?I get to be silly and I get to experience what it’s like to be a different kind of person.
Why should people come and see the show? It’s something the school hasn’t done for a while, and there are new students who haven’t done it before and they’re really excited.
