HPV TAILEM BEND – 5 AUGUST

On 5 August, the St Joseph’s College Human Powered Vehicle Team competed in Round 4 of the Australian HPV Super Series: 'The Bend 8 Hour' in Tailem Bend. We started the day early having breakfast at 6:00am and getting to the track by 7:30am for a 9:00am start. All four cars started off the race well gaining positions and keeping a steady pace. Around about the halfway point our worst nightmares came true; it started raining. All cars on the track were struggling with the harsh conditions.  The track was slippery, and there were crashes happening everywhere. The windows fogged up, and no one could see a thing. We were having to pit regularly to wipe the inside and outside of our windows. Luckily, the rain did not last too long, and all our cars made it across the line after eight hours of racing with barely any problems.

On the weekend we achieved St Joseph’s best results yet. Resilience came first out of six in mixed middle school (four boys, four girls) and third out of 54 in the middle school section overall. Mallee Missile came first out of four in mixed high school and 18th out of 52 in the high school section overall, Virtuous came 11th out of 54 in the middle school section overall and our all-female team, Sunraysia Star, came 40th out of 54 in the middle school section overall. Also, Mallee Missile’s Darcy Noonan and Resilience’s Jett Johnson set the fastest lap in their respective categories, so congratulations to them.

A big thank-you to the parent helpers for making our meals and helping out all weekend, to the teachers for looking after us all, to our coach Airlie Arnold for her experience and inspiring words, to Mr Daniel Loveridge for driving us safely to and from the event, and to Mr Marcus Parker and Mr John Fleming because none of these events could happen without them.

Well done to all the riders who competed this weekend. Everyone performed very well and worked well as a team, helping when they could. Hopefully, we can do even better at the next race in Murray Bridge.

MARY MACKILLOP FEAST DAY

Mary MacKillop Feast Day is held on 8 August in honour of the revered Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

She was the first Saint of Australia, and her influence in the country has spread far and wide. She is recognised for her commitment to the poor, helping those who needed it the most in any way she could.

During her feast day, thousands flock to Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney, New South Wales. This is the site where the saint lived, but it’s also where she died. Many come to pay respects to her tomb, celebrate Mass, and share food here.

Prayer

Loving God,

We thank you for the example of Mary MacKillop who, in her living of the Gospel witnessed to the human dignity of each person.

She faced life’s challenges with faith and courage.

We pray through her intercession for our needs.

May her holiness inspire us to be people of hope, love and forgiveness.

We make this prayer through Jesus the Lord.

Amen.

'Despite the many problems,' said Pope Francis, 'she kept her calm and carried her cross patiently as an essential part of her mission.'
