Year 2 Curriculum Newsletter
Reading
In Term 3, we will focus on developing our reading skills further. We will learn to determine the importance of a text by identifying key details and understanding their significance. We will also practice reading for meaning and strategies to use when meaning is lost, such as using context clues and prior knowledge to infer meaning. Additionally, we will expand our vocabulary by learning and applying tier two words, which are important for understanding a wide range of texts. Finally, we will continue to strengthen our spelling skills by exploring spelling generalisations and rules to spell words accurately.
Writing
During Term 3, we will explore the structure of an information report. We will learn how to organize our writing by following the appropriate sections and using headings and subheadings. In addition, we will work on improving our handwriting skills to ensure our writing is legible and neat. We will also focus on the writing process, including brainstorming ideas, planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing our writing. To support our creativity, we will utilise our Writer's Notebook to experiment with, create, and develop ideas for our writing pieces.
Speaking and Listening
In our speaking and listening activities, we will develop important skills for effective communication. We will practice active listening when participating in conversations, ensuring we give our full attention to others. We will also enhance our ability to describe characters, settings, and events in different types of literature, fostering our comprehension and communication skills. Moreover, we will engage in pair, group, and class discussions, actively contributing our ideas and taking turns when responding.
Mathematics
In Mathematics this term, we will explore various concepts and skills. We will investigate number sequences and patterns through skip counting, enhancing our ability to identify and extend patterns. We will also recognise and represent multiplication and division, building a solid foundation for mathematical operations. Additionally, we will delve into the measurement of area and mass using informal units, allowing us to compare and understand the relative sizes of objects. We will explore geometry by learning about 2D and 3D shapes and understanding their properties. Furthermore, we will be introduced to transformations, which involve moving, flipping, and resizing shapes. Lastly, we will explore statistics and probability, developing an understanding of data representation and the likelihood of events occurring.
We look forward to an exciting and productive Term 3, where we will continue to grow and expand our knowledge and skills in various areas.
Inquiry
This term we will explore the fascinating world of places and their addresses. Students will develop their geographical understanding by exploring various aspects of places. They will examine the scale of places, learn why places have addresses and discover how places get their names. Students will learn about the states, and major cities of Australia. Through maps, discussions and activities, students will develop an understanding of the geographic layout of our nation.
Finally, we will explore the relationship between location and weather. Students will learn how factors like latitude, proximity to bodies of water, and elevation influence climate and weather patterns. We are excited to embark on this geographical journey with our students and explore the diverse aspects of places and addresses.

Year 2 Team
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, students in Year 2 will continue to explore collage, focusing on creating positive and negative shapes. They will investigate paper construction, creating cylinder shapes, imaginative shapes, animal shapes. Students will begin to explore threads and textiles through paper weaving projects. They will further develop their ability to describe artworks they make and view, including where and why artworks are made and viewed.
Performing Arts
Production! Production! Production! This term all students, in all year levels will be spending Performing Arts classes rehearsing for our upcoming whole school production 'Kismet in Story Land'. Students will be rehearsing two separate dances, as well as the retelling of their cohorts' chosen story. Students will be exploring creative and expressive dramatic skills during their scene, as well as enhancing their co-ordination and gross-motor skills when learning their stage entrances, exits and on-stage rotations. All students are encouraged to participate in rehearsals, regardless of whether they intend to perform on the night, as these are important skills in confidence and teamwork.
Japanese
This term in Japanese we are having a whole school focus on self introductions. The Year 2 students are learning how to say “Nice to meet you”, “My name is…”, “I am … years old”, “I like…”, “I live in…” and “I’m in grade 2”. On Tuesday 1st August, Kismet Park Primary School will be hosting some Japanese students for a day. These students are from Nagano High School, the sister school of Sunbury College. We hope that our students will get the opportunity to introduce themselves in Japanese to our visitors. Students will also continue to develop their understanding of the Japanese writing system through various activities and build their vocabulary through games, songs and crafts.
Physical Education
This term students will be exploring the sport of Gymnastics and Dance. They will be given the opportunity to move their bodies in a variety of ways and begin to sequence movements. The focus is on moving bodies safely and with good control. Students will be encouraged to show good balance, strength and flexibility. Through dance, students will be able to participate in group and partner dances.
