Year 8&9 Humanities Excursion
Year 9 Sovereign Hill Excursion
The Year 9 students visited Sovereign Hill, the wonderful open-air museum in Ballarat, to participate in the education program relating to their current studies in History - The Industrial Revolution. The program allowed the students to explore how the Industrial Revolution affected living and working conditions on Australia’s 1850s goldfields.
Students panned for gold in the creek, saw $150,000 worth of molten gold poured into a gleaming bar, journeyed underground on a gold mine tour and watched a play in the theatre about the treatment of Chinese miners.
It was a great day out filled with an amazing array of activities and experiences that definitely enhanced the students’ learning.
Year 8 Kryal Castle Excursion
The Year 8 students visited Kryal Castle in Ballarat to participate in the Education Discovery Program which explores the Medieval period of history that we are now studying. They learned about medieval dance and the ancient art of leather stamping where they each made a bag tag/bookmark to take home.
Students honed their archery skills. They learned about the history of weaponry and armour and how it has evolved throughout the ages. Students had a chance to feel and try on knight’s helmets, gauntlets, gambesons, breast plates and chain mail.
Finally, Year 8’s participated in some sword training and learned the proper use of a sword and shield. Using their newly gained skills they re-enacted the Battle of Hastings and the strategies used in battle. It was a very apt and dramatic ending to a Medieval Day!
