Year 9-10 Football

Year 9-10 Football roared back into life last night with Round 1 of the revamped SSATIS roster. Six teams took to the field yesterday representing Sacred Heart, Hutchins, MacKillop, St Aloysius, Friends' and St Virgil's. Traditionally held in Term 2, the new round robin format in Term 3 has allowed for increased participation from schools, including most of the schools representative players. With three games at the same venue each week and with the support from AFL Tasmania, night one was a big hit with players and spectators.

Team sVc turned on the jets from the first bounce with a clinical and  slick performance to defeat Friends' 17.15.117 to 0.1.1. Congratulations to Year 10 student Jorge Triffett who kicked 10 goals in what was a dominant performance in front of goals and has the football tragics combing the record books for a better school boy performance.

College Principal Mr Jon Franzin and Deputy Principal Mr Daniel Lapolla were also on hand to watch the match and present badges to the newly appointed Team sVc Leaders. Mr Franzin gave an inspiration speech to the boys about the proud history of our College and the virtues of leading by Deeds not Words alone. Congratulations to Lachlan Davey (C) who will be supported by Leadership Group Members, Anthony Volta, Tom Prokopiec, Mitchell Green and Ethan Conallin.

Upcoming fixtures for Team sVc are as follows:

Round 2: Wednesday 9 August vs MacKillop @ 4.00 pm at Geilston Bay Oval #1

Round 3: Wednesday 16 August vs Sacred Heart @ 6.30 pm at Geilston Bay Oval #1

Round 4: Wednesday 23 August vs Hutchins @ 2.40 pm at WMO (Doubles as the Alex Gadomski Cup)

The table and fixtures can be found at https://satis.com.au/sports/afl/.

The Alex Gadomski Cup - Wednesday 23 August

In its 6th year, this football match is a Year 9-10 game and aims to honour one of SVC's former students Alex Gadomski and to raise awareness and much needed funds for the Alex Gadomski Fellowship….all in order to find a cure for bone marrow failure.

2023 will see 2 curtain raiser matches between the two schools played before the main match.

Curtain Raiser 1 Year 5-6 - 11.30 pm

Curtain Raiser 2 Year 7-8 - 1.00 pm

Alex Gadomski Cup Year 9-10 - 2.40 pm

(Doubles as the last round of the Year 9/10 SSATIS Roster)

All Old Boys of boys schools, current students and family/friends are encouraged to attend. This event is open to the general public and is free of charge. All matches will be played on the War Memorial Oval at The Hutchins School. Sausage sizzle available and donations welcome.

You will see two great schools with plenty of sporting rivalry and tradition...coming together for a terrific cause. Live stream via DUFF TV. Details to be provided closer to the event.

Swim Trials

Congratulations to the students that participated in the Swim Trials on Monday at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre. The team to compete in the SSATIS Swimming Carnival will be announced early next week.

If selected in the sVc Swim Team, students are required to wear sVc approved bathers and swim cap, which can be purchased through the Uniform Shop. The Uniform Shop is open Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, 8.00 am - 4.00 pm or can be contacted on 6249 3610 or st.virgils@midford.com.au.

Swimming Dates:

SSATIS - Friday 1 September

SATIS - Wednesday 13 September

(both conducted at the DKHAC)

Further, Team sVc members will be required to attend two training sessions at the DKHAC on Friday 18 and 25 August from 7.00 am to 8.00 am.  The College will bus the boys to school at the conclusion of training.  Training will focus on starts, dives and relay changes.

Regional Basketball Trials

St Virgil's College will be conducting trials in order to select representative teams to compete in the Regional High School Basketball Championships.

Please note the following trial date and times:

Tuesday 29 August, Edmund Rice Hall, Austins Ferry

  • Years 7/8: 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm
  • Years 9/10: 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm

Boys should wear their sports uniform and bring appropriate footwear. Registration to trial does not guarantee selection into a team.

Conducted by Basketball Tasmania, the Regional High School Basketball Championships will be conducted over the weekend of 25-26 November in Hobart.

sVc will only be entering four teams as follows:

Division 11 x Year 7/8 team (10 players max)1 x Year 9/10 team (10 players max)

Division 21 x Year 7/8 team (10 players max)1 x Year 9/10 team (10 players max)

Basketball Tasmania will assist College staff with the selection process.

Students that trial should be serious about their basketball and ideally be playing club, regional or BTAS representative level, however this is not essential. Participation in the Term 1 SSATIS Basketball roster is not a prerequisite for selection but will be taken into consideration. As this is a representative tournament teams will be selected as such; wider participation in basketball is welcomed and encouraged through Term 1 SSATIS inter-school roster opportunities.

Representing the College is a privilege and ongoing participation in these trials and selected teams is subject to meeting the College's behavior and academic expectations, along with advice from Heads of House and College Leadership.

Registrations to participate in the trials close at 5.00 pm on Monday 28 August, 2023.

To register CLICK HERE and complete the Google Form.

The top three in Division 1 in each age group will qualify to compete in the State High School Basketball Championships over the weekend of 9-10 December in Launceston.

If selected, boys are required to provide their own basketball specific uniforms (singlet and shorts) which can be purchased through the Uniform Shop. The Uniform Shop is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8.00 am - 4.00 pm or can be contacted on 6249 3610 or st.virgils@midford.com.au.

Training details will be advised once teams are selected and coaches appointed.
