Head of Junior School

Mrs Jo Messer

How wonderful it was to return to school last week and see so many smiling happy faces in our student body. Everyone looked rested, relaxed, recharged, and ready to hit the ground running for Term 3. As we begin our term, and winter is still upon us, we would like to remind you that boys are required to wear their jumpers with their formal uniform to school and to keep this on, at least, until recess. On days when boys wear their sports uniform, the rule is to wear their trackpants and soft-shell jacket to and from school.

Sporting Achievements

The last night of Term 2 was Grand Final Night for the schools’ water polo competition. Whilst our Junior School was not represented in the finals, our very own Nate Debnam (4R) was awarded the 3rd Most Valuable Player in the Year 5-6 A Division. Congratulations Nate!

Last term many of our boys competed in the Primary All Schools Cross Country event at Symmons Plains. Whilst we did not receive a first place in any age category, our three Year 6 boys’ combined times, meant that they were placed third overall in the Year 6 event. Congratulations to Jesse Mackey, Winston Marriner and Finlay Child on a wonderful team effort. This is a first for SVC, so well done on your team performance.

Parents and Friends

This term we have some exciting community events we would like to invite you to be involved in. On Friday 18 August, we will be hosting a Footy Family Fun Night in the Junior School Hall. On the ‘big screen’ we will be playing the Collingwood vs Brisbane Friday night match. There will be food and fun on the night, including a handball competition and a competition to design a jumper for the new Tasmanian AFL team plus more! Whether you support the Lions or the Magpies, it will be a fun community night to be involved in. Details will be sent out shortly.

Choomalaka Festival & Feast: 22 September

The Choomalaka Festival is a College celebration of every student’s skills and talents through sound, light, colour and movement. It is a celebration of the artistic talents of all our students.

As in previous years, all of our classes will be performing a musical item on the night, from Kindergarten through to Year 6. For these class performances to be a success, it will require all students from each year group to participate. Along with a celebration of our students’ talent, there will also be food and beverage options available for purchase.

Weeks 1 and 2 in The Junior School!

Year 4 News

After three weeks of hard work, Year 4 were able to put their woodwork skills to the test. Our Year 4 class have been heading out to the Senior campus over several weeks to work with Mr Maxwell in the woodwork classroom. Students had to design and create their very own racing cars. On Tuesday they had their first go at racing these using gas canisters to give them forward motion. Some cars went really well, while others are thinking about some modifications they can make to their homemade vehicle next week.

Year 6 Support Classmate

Our Year 6 classes exuded sportsmanship and support at the U12 National Hockey Championships on Tuesday, cheering on their classmate William Lowe and the Tasmanian team. Miss Mikayla Lack, Mr Tom Beard and Mrs Alison Wignell took the students to the Hockey Tasmania Centre in New Town, where a special mention of the enthusiastic crew was made by commentators and the crowd of parents. What was even better was that Tasmania scored a win against WA with all the extra support. Congratulations to Will on your achievements!

Our Hard-Working, Industrious Year 1 Cohort

Our Year 1 class has been very industrious in the last week. They have celebrated 100 days of school, visited the ‘Art from Trash’ Exhibition at Salamanca and viewed their own artwork and planted trees for National Tree Day.

All students have officially completed 100 days of school for the year. To celebrate, our Year 1 students were invited to dress up in 100-themed outfits and enjoyed a variety of 100-themed activities!

The sun was shining last Friday at the Junior School as the Year 1 boys put on their hats and gloves and got out into nature to plant some trees that were donated by Co-Op Toyota for National Schools Tree Day. It was great to see how excited the boys were to be improving their school grounds with trees and plants.

Children’s Book Week: Week 5: Read, Grow, Inspire

In Week 5 we will be celebrating Children’s Book Week. The theme for Book Week this year is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’. Boys are required to wear their sports uniform to school, and if they wish to participate, to bring a costume to change into for our Book Week Parade. Early Years students will be allowed to wear their costume to and from school. Let your imagine flow with this year’s theme! Costumes should reflect a book or book character and could be as simple as hats, wigs, glasses, scarves, and other accessories. More information will be sent in a broadcast.
