STEAM

Leanne Williams - Learning Specialist Engagement

Term 3

Students (and teachers) have had the opportunity to be immersed in engaging STEAM experiences. A recent article published by invent.org stated that "STEM-based education teaches children more than science and mathematics. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st century skills."

We aim to create hands-on learning experiences for our amazing students each week. A big thank you to the families who came to visit the STEAM Room during the Learner Agency Showcase, we love to show the incredible learning we are doing in this space.

Prep

Prep students conducted a scientific experiment, they made snow! Students also focused on descriptive language as they described what they saw and felt.

Year 1/2

Students have been undertaking experiments related to the Chemical Science area of the Victoria Curriculum. This enabled them to demonstrate their understanding that everyday materials can be physically changed or combined with other materials in a variety of ways.

Year 1 spent last Friday describing the properties of dried PVA and how it changed after water was added. The end result was a very colourful bouncy ball.

Year 2s final task was to predict and observe what would happen after adding certain ingredients to a basic rocky road recipe. The ingredients for the students to choose from: Corn Flakes, smarties, sultanas, Rice Bubbles, coconut, icing sugar, water, and cheese.

I'm very happy to report that NO ONE selected cheese!

Year 3/4

First things first, Year 4 battled it out in the Inaugural Rover Rumble! In teams, the students tested if their rover could deliver fresh greens across the surface of Mars.

Well done to the winning team: Jessica W, Skye S and Sage H!

This term, Year 3/4 are creating claymation films based on a rule at school that they want to change.  Students have been analysing and critiquing animated movies and learning tips and tricks for high-quality animation.

Another massive shout out to Heather Britton (grandmother of Frankie in Year 5) for all of her expertise and time.

Year 5/6

Students are well and truly underway with their preparation for the inaugural LegoRobo Soccer Cup. Students have been building their Goalie and learning Word Block coding to defend their goals.

Stay tuned for details about the knockout cup!

Student quotes about STEAM:

"It gives non-athletic students an opportunity to represent their school. " Tom B - Year 5

"STEAM this term is fun but also challenging, I love the competitive aspect." Charlie H - Year 5
