International Student Program Assistant

The International Student Program at North Geelong Secondary College is such a memorable experience for not only the International Students but the Homestay families too. The recent Short Stay Study Tour of Chinese International Students proved to be no different. The students experienced some amazing sites around regional Geelong from the Great Ocean Road to the wonderful and delicious Chocolate Factory in which the ice cream proved to be a real delicacy for all of the International Students. Two amazing aspects, which we take for granted were the beaches and a rainbow, which was sighted. None of the International Students had actually seen a rainbow before and this was such a focal and discussion point for the remainder of the day. The sand filtering through the students’ fingers was also a memorable experience and this was a huge highlight to everyone. The International Students were totally grateful and blessed to have had such an amazing and welcoming stay but also being a part of our College community by proudly wearing our NGSC jumper, to participating as students in various classes for the week.

LOTE Week 2023

This year NGSC ran our inaugural Languages Week during Week 9 of Term 2. Languages staff held activities every day at lunchtime. German events included Finger Wrestling, Yodelling, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Boardgames of the Year, and DJs Hinz and Gibson rocked the Piazza. Japanese offerings included Kamishibai (Japanese storytelling), wearing Yukata and Kimono, micro Zen Garden creation, Japanese calligraphy, a manga drawing competition, and the eSports comp on the Taiko no Tatsujin (Taiko Drumming Master) game. Jordan Tucker took first place, Li Ling He placed second, and a valiant effort was made by Alira Bianco in third place in the drumming competition. Joint first place was taken by Ethan Papazoglou and Daniel Soloninka in the manga competition.

It was great to see the enthusiasm from our students towards these cultural activities. Thank you to all who participated in the various activities over the week.

Izumiotsu Sister City Visit

NGSC will be welcoming 10 students and 4 staff from Izumiotsu, Osaka, Japan for a week between the 11th and 17th of August. Izumiotsu has been Geelong’s Sister City since 1992, and NGSC joined 3 Junior High Schools and the Izumiotsu Senior High School in Sister School relationships in 2019 after welcoming 10 students from these schools on a study tour in 2018. Our students visited Izumiotsu in October 2019 on the reciprocal exchange program. We had a most fantastic time learning more about Japanese culture and language and it is so exciting to be able to resume this program following the disruptions from COVID-19.

The group will be participating in classes at our school and cultural experiences in our wider community.

Please make our visiting students feel part of our multicultural NGSC program.

Thank you in advance to all our student host families who are opening their homes and lives to give these visiting students a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We are looking forward to our next opportunity to visit Izumiotsu on our reciprocal exchange in 2024. Students studying Japanese in years 8 and upwards will be welcomed to apply to participate in the 2024 study tour. Keep an eye out for future updates on participant recruitment in the near future.

Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language Program Participation

NGSC will be hosting Asaka TAMAKI, a Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts (university) student from Kyoto through the Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language Program. This program matches Japanese university students with a passion for education and how Japanese is learnt in Victoria, with schools teaching Japanese in Victoria. NGSC has previously hosted participants in this program twice and each time has been a marvellous experience for our Japanese language learners. We are thrilled that Asaka will be with us from August 7th through September 1st, 2023, helping our students learn Japanese.

Multicultural Committee News

Welcome back to Term 3 - the winter weather is now really upon us.

The Multicultural Committee met on Monday 24 July over lunchtime (12:45 pm) with refreshments on offer. The main agenda and discussions were focussed on advance planning for our upcoming NGSC Multicultural Festival (Friday 20 October). At the table lots of discussions, brain storming, bouncing of ideas and fine-tuning before the next meeting.

Also, we are pleased to reveal this year’s Multicultural Festival theme "FUSION".

We look forward to further ideas at the next meeting on Monday 28 August.

The Multicultural Committee values any input from the NGSC school community, if you are interested in contributing, you are welcome to attend our next meeting. Everyone is welcome to contact the NGSC Multicultural Committee team with ideas!
