Year One News

Hi, Year One families,

Who can believe that it is Week Four already? We have been busy learning and having fun. In Writing, the students are learning to write an information report. They are learning about the structure (heading, general description, appearance, diet, habitat and conclusion). This ties in well with our Inquiry topic, ‘Our Wonderful World’, where students are learning about animal environments and the animals that live there.

In Reading, the students have been building on the strategies that they use to comprehend the main idea of a text. They are also learning to recognise singular and plural words. In phonics, students have been learning the long vowel sounds. They also enjoy using Reading Eggs to practise their reading skills.

In Speaking and Listening, the students have been talking about the data that they collected at home and describing the graph they created. We are encouraging the students to make eye contact, use positive body language and speak at an appropriate volume and pace.

We would like to thank you for reading with your children and practising their word rings at home on a regular basis. We are seeing the students progress as well as grow in confidence. Seeing the students enjoying reading and feeling empowered is just wonderful!

As we all know, students like to use technology. Here are some websites, apps and YouTube clips that your child may be interested in, which are a great way to reinforce what they are learning at school.

  • Literactive (website)
  • Epic! (app)
  • OzPhonics (app)
  • Geraldine the giraffe (YouTube; you can subscribe to Mr. T)
  • Bounce Patrol (YouTube)
  • Storybots (YouTube)
  • ABCMouse.com (website)
  • Kids vs Phonics (YouTube)
  • Pinkfong (YouTube)

Thank you again for your support at home.

Please refer to the following fortnightly planner to see what the students are learning.
