SPC Boarding  News

The past week has been such a busy time for all, especially the SPC boarders. Last Friday, we were so proud to have four boarding teams represent and compete against fierce opposition in the annual Round Square 6Hr Sports which included volleyball, netball and dodgeball. It was impressive to see the boarders take on other teams of boarding and day students. New friendships were forged as students worked with each other in teams they would not normally have chosen for themselves.

On Monday our events were based on the theme of resilience and not giving up when things get difficult. We discussed ‘gaining the skills about knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do’. Ernie led the discussion and staff and students were thankful for his knowledge and expertise on the topic.

Our Year 7 boarders left for their Discovery Camp this week and were looking forward to spending time camping and participating in all activities with their classmates. On Wednesday evening we had the boarders return, although incredibly tired, they came back with stories of all the fun times they'd had while they were away.

With only three weeks of this term left, we are well and truly coming into the business end of things. It is essential that all boarders now put their thinking caps on and put 100% effort into maximising their time in the classroom and in afternoon homework time. These few weeks can be a period of high stress, so self-management and self-care are imperative and asking for help when needed shows strength.  It is also a time to show a little extra kindness to others, as we are all nearing the end of a very busy term and are looking forward to spending our holidays recharging with our families.

And now we would like to acknowledge the tremendous contribution to the development of the SPCB Office by Jill Fitzgerald in her five week stint as a consultant. We are well on the way to providing the tools for boarders to further develop their self management skills on their path to being able to live independently. A big thank you to Jill from all of us here at SPCB (St Philip's College Boarding).

Girls' Boarding News

Saturday morning was business as usual, we all went shopping in town and then headed to the courts to support our fellow netballers as they competed against each in the local, Alice Spring's competition. We all enjoyed cheering on our boarding family members as they represented the school in such a positive way.

On Sunday morning, we had a pancake breakfast. Thank you to Karen for making the pancake batter on Saturday night and to Imarnie’s mum for coming in early on Sunday morning to cook the pancakes on the bbq. Sunday afternoon saw the girls travelling to The Dust Bowl for a fun filled afternoon of tenpin bowling followed by Chapel.

I have been so proud of the girls’ lately, just a reminder to all to keep up the great work and have a fantastic weekend!

Boys' Boarding News

The boys had an event filled week, again sharing whole boarding experiences like the Round Square 6Hour Sports with the Girls’ Boarding House and the day school.

The Year 7 camp was a highlight for our eight Year 7 boarders – the House was considerably quieter without them! They returned full of stories about the adventure.

This week some of the senior boys continued their off site VET learning, gaining lifelong qualifications like the White Card.

The list of community sports the boys are involved in continues to grow with rugby league, more soccer and volleyball added to the list. Angas started rugby league, Pedrea joined men's volleyball and Daniel, Malcolm and Cleon joined the Verdi Soccer Club.

Given the time of the term, task completion is a priority with exams and reports just around the corner, extra time is being spent ensuring the end of semester report is one they are proud to take home.
