SMARTS Performance

Semester 1, 2021 saw the introduction of SMARTS into the Middle School curriculum.  The program provides Middle School students the opportunity to choose between a variety of activities based on creativity and movement in an effort to develop character-building qualities such as teamwork, courage, problem solving, responsibility, self-awareness, communication and compassion.  Following the theme of Community, the Performing and Visual Arts students have been preparing to showcase their developing skills at an end of Semester performance.

This week the Middle School attended the Year 7 and 8 showcase during Period 4 on Thursday.  After entering the Hall via a display of Visual Artwork the show opened with a performance from the SMARTS Band and followed with performances from the choir, drama and dance groups.  Behind the scenes were a back stage crew who experimented with lighting, smoke and sound effects to bring the show together.

My highlight was talking with individual students after the performance.  For many it was the first time they’d performed in such a way and they spoke with pride about what they had achieved.

Congratulations to everyone involved!  With the Year 7’s and 8’s setting the bar so high I look forward to what the Year 9’s produce next semester.
