Lasalle

In the iconic words of Bonnie Tyler - What a Total Eclipse of La Salle. Turnaround

After a measured and spirited beginning to the year in the House Swimming and Athletics, La Salle turned it up to ‘epic’ in the House Public Speaking and House Debating.

First up was House Debating. The team consisted of three elite students in Austin Warfe, Lewis Desmond and Lachlan Doyle from years 10, 11 and 12 respectively. Our first heat featured the argument “The lives of public figures should remain private”. We agreed with exactly what you were just thinking - that public figures should indeed have their right to privacy.  Of course, the adjudicators agreed too. This took us through to the final against some fine competition in Benilde. The new contention became “Money can buy you happiness” which saw 50 dollar notes thrown into the crowd to their immediate pleasure (until they saw they were fake – La Salle are working with a tight budget unfortunately). Case closed, point proven. What a win it was for La Salle. A special thank you to Ms Kensley for her help in preparing the team.

The next event in La Salle’s sight was House Public Speaking. This competition allowed students to pre-prepare their speeches for the topic “A simple gift”. We brought in the troops with Chris Bufalo (11) and the veteran Lachlan Doyle (12), hot off the heels of the debating win. There were some passionate, insightful deliveries from each of the houses, however, in the end, not only did we take out Best speakers from both Years 11 and 12, La Salle won overall. A great effort from all involved.

Following on from this St Bede’s was host to the Plain English Speaking Awards. Given their efforts in the House Public Speaking, Chris and Lachlan represented the College in fine form. Both speakers delivered passionate and polished presentations on topics of their choosing; Lachlan delivered his speech “Listen and learn” and Chris’ speech was entitled “But what could I do?” Following a stand-out effort in the prepared category, all speakers from the various schools were asked after 4 minutes’ preparation to deliver a 3-minute impromptu speech on the same topic: “Don’t leave home without it”. Their messages – to never leave home without your education nor your understanding of personal identity – were impactfully conveyed in this competition. Although not winners on the day, these two speakers represented St Bede’s wonderfully, conveying messages that capture what it means to be a St Bede’s and La Salle student. Congratulations and well done.

A proud term of work from La Salle!
