From the School Leadership Team,

From Mr. Chant,

Principal

This week we were informed that Mrs. Nadia Walker, our Assistant Principal, will be leaving our school.

Together with her boys and husband they are moving to northern New South Wales and returning to the community where they grew up. This is wonderful news for Mrs. Walker and her family, but we are saddened that she will be leaving us just before the end of this term. Her impact in such a short time has been tremendous and her work in supporting staff as they take on the challenges of school improvement has ensured her work has impacted positively in every classroom and for every student. We are commencing a process to find a replacement and we will keep everyone updated as this progresses.

Our ongoing commitment to becoming an active community continued this morning when we had many additional families take the challenge of walking to school. It was great to welcome some extra smiling faces to the gate and we thank all those who were able to join in this special event. We look forward to our next walk to school day, watch the calendar.

Education Week is from May 24 to 28.  We have lots of activities planned.  All information is included on the Education Week page later in the newsletter.

We are holding a book sale  on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th May, just outside the main building. Gold coin donation. All funds collected will go towards the purchase of new library books. Further information can be found later within this newsletter.

The National assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy-NAPLAN concluded yesterday. Our year 3 and year 5 students completed the Language Conventions, Reading, Writing and Numeracy sections in their classrooms and took on the challenges contained in these booklets with enthusiasm and determination. The results will be forwarded to families once they are returned to school and staff will add these results to the data already being collected across the school around student performance. Well done to our students, the staff and the organising team.

Shavuot is a fun festival which is a celebration of harvesting the first fruits. It will be celebrated on Monday and Tuesday next week. This is a time when the Jewish community acknowledge and appreciate all the good that they have and are grateful for having food and good things, friends and family in their lives. Some people even stay up the whole night learning!  There is a custom to eat ice-cream and cheesecake on Shavuot. A cheesecake recipe and link is contained in the newsletter.

Staff are preparing for the production of the mid-year written report on student progress. Alongside this we will make a booking process available using our Compass platform to allow families to arrange a time to have important discussions around their child’s progress and learning plans. These important interviews are planned for the last week of this term. More details will follow via Compass.

This week we have had some visits from the Parking Infringement Officers from the Glen Eira Council. Please park according to the signs around our school and remember driveways are not parking spaces!!

Every year our school can access a variety of grants made available through not for profit projects, community groups, from local, state and federal government initiatives and private organisations. We are looking to access these resources more often and ask our community to send in details of grant opportunities that they have access to or are aware of, and secondly we are hoping members of the community who have skills in this area can support us by writing or supporting our applications. Please contact the office if you can assist us in accessing these resources.

Dear CJC community,

Cultural Day

This term the 1/2's have been researching  ‘How we celebrate our world’ as part of our inquiry unit. We held a ‘cultural day’ where we shared our cultures and celebrations. The 1/2 students participated in some rotations with their teachers while sharing their culture. Thank you to the whole team for organising this event which relays a beautiful message of acceptance.

Alliance Française’s Berthe Mouchette Competition

On Thursday May 20th, all students from Grade 3 to 6 will perform in the Berthe Mouchette competition.  The Berthe Mouchette Competition is an opportunity for students to practice their French language skills and culture by participating in a competition, with great prizes to be won!  Every year for over a century, millions of young Victorians have been bringing French poetry from the other side of the world.

Education Week

The week starting on May 24 marks the start of Education Week 2021.  At CJC we have planned a great program and parents are invited to share activities with their child, teachers and other school families.  We are excited to welcome you!

I wish you all a fantastic weekend!
