Learning and Teaching

Prayer Celebrations, Excursions, Arrays and so much more!

Clinic 1 Mathematics Clinic have been exploring Multiplication.

We have been building our understanding of creating Arrays as a visual representation of Multiplication equations. We have also been learning that we are able to partition arrays to solve problems and find the product.

The students have been building on their Mathematical language and have worked on removing the word ‘TIMES’ from their vocabulary and are using ‘GROUPS OF’ to describe the mathematics symbol of ‘X’ E.g. (5 x 3 = 5 GROUPS OF 3).

In continuation with our Term 2 Inquiry Unit looking at ‘Continuity and Change’ the LS3 Seniors went on an excursion to CERES School of Nature and Climate in Brunswick East exploring ‘Indigenous Perspectives’. Students were able to build on their understanding of the ancient knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders cultures and beliefs. The students were immersed into experiences that built their understanding of the culture and beliefs and learning ways to keep tradition alive. We even tried different Bush Foods!

The students of LS3 both Junior and Senior came together for a beautiful prayer celebration. Our senior students composed our Prayers of the Faithful connecting with those in need in our community and those around us. The Junior and Senior students all participated with reverence and respect and shared their angelic singing voices during our Hymns.

SPORTS NEWS

SENIOR SPORTS

Today Grade 5/6 competed in their 2nd Inter school Sports match against St Kevin’s. We hope they had a great time!! Next week Grade 5/6 will have their next match on Friday August 19th against Rangebank Primary. This will be an away game.

A reminder to the football and basketball teams to bring their team tops and the football team must also bring their mouth guards. No Mouth guard, no play! For those playing on grass, it may be a good idea to bring a change of socks in case they get wet. The football team is encouraged to have other clothes to change into in case they become wet and muddy while playing.

JUNIOR TAEKWONDO

This week was our first week of Junior Taekwondo. The students and staff had a great time!!! Boxing was the focus of our first session with lots of vocalising. Lorenza and Vivienne definitely needed the doors of the Community Room closed! Even then they could hear the students!!

Next week we will have a break and then taekwondo sessions will continue in Week 7, 8 and 9. I believe in the next session students will focus on kicking.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Trent Hanlon from Hall’s Taekwondo in Brunswick for making our clinics possible. The coaches Kiara, Monique and George are travelling over an hour to run our clinics and their enthusiasm is remarkable. Thank you!

Please ensure your child wears their sports uniform and brings their drink bottles on the following days:

Mondays LS3 (Except Week 7 – Wednesday August 24th instead of Monday)

Tuesdays LS2

Fridays LS1 (Except Week 8 – Thursday September 1st instead of Friday)

DISTRICT ATHLETICS

During Week 7 of Term 3 some of our Senior Students will be involved in District Athletics where we compete against other schools in our district.

Our team is now finalised and we would like to congratulate the students who qualified and also all the students who put their name down to try out. We encourage everyone to try out again next year.

Further details are available on Operoo for parents whose children have qualified. Please give permission via Operoo and ensure your child’s profile is up to date.

SWIMMING

THANK YOU TO ALL PARENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED THE OPEROO FORM AND RETURNED THE SWIMMING ABILTY FORM. BOTH WERE DUE TODAY.

As parents are aware, after a break of two years, much needed swimming lessons will again take place in Term 4. Swimming is an essential part of the Physical Education Curriculum and we are obliged to provide swimming lessons for students. As such, it is expected that all students attend the swimming lessons. Exemptions will only be accepted with a medical certificate provided from a doctor.

We ask parents who have not yet given permission on Operoo and completed and returned the swimming ability form to do so by Monday as I will need to finalise numbers with the pool and also hand over the ability forms.

Remember to assist you must have a current Working With Children Check and it must be registered with the School Office.

The Victorian State Government in conjunction with Lifesaving Victoria have published some material explaining the importance of school swimming lessons. I have included the links to this material for your reference.
