This Week in GRADES 3/4...

Week 4 'done and dusted' already? The weeks are sure flying by and we wonder why? So much 'fun learning' has been had -that's why! Here's a little of what we've all been up to this week....

Reading

Our unit on poetry continues! This week we started to look at the poetic devices 'alliteration', 'onomatopoeia' and 'repetition'. Students enjoyed finding examples of these in their reading and also being creative and putting a bit in their own narratives!

Writing

Writing linked to reading which proved very effective! Students embraced the opportunity to use their knowledge of alliteration and onomatopoeia and intertwined these in to their narratives. We continue the fun next week when we delve in to 'imagery' and 'spoonerisms'.

Spelling

This week our spelling focus was 'a' as in banana. Some of us took the brief opportunity to practise our words out in the sun!

Maths

This week's focus was consolidating our knowledge of division and also revisiting our fractions and decimals 'brain power'. Students played games such as 'Fraction Bingo' and also gave their best efforts solving division algorithms and worded problems.

Other stuff....

  • We were very fortunate to have an extra 'Virtual Science Lesson' this week. On Wednesday morning, we tuned in to the Bendigo Science & Discovery Centre's virtual science lesson. Our objective was to work individually, with a partner or in a small group, to construct a bridge to withstand a book or two! Catch was - we only had icy-pole sticks, sticky tape, paper, string and rubber bands to work with. Check out some of our designs above and below!
  • We can finally confirm our Sovereign Hill excursion - Wednesday, 31st of August. Students will participate in an education session, watch a gold pour demonstration, have a go at candle dipping and enjoy some time to themselves to explore the grounds. We currently anticipate the cost to be around $60.The bus will leave school at 8:30am and return around 3:30pm.  More information will go out next week
  • It's always great to see our students taking advantage of our 'Brain Breaks' and choosing to munch on fruit or vegetables. Lately, we've noticed quite a few whole apples being thrown in our compost with only one or two bites out of them :-(. Can we please suggest, if your child is keen on eating apples, perhaps cutting them up might be a bit more efficient to eat for that short time (5-10 mins)
  • Students involved in the Castlemaine Health Art Project were super proud of their efforts, as they finished their pieces this week and were sent off to be enjoyed! Thanks to Juliet for driving this project - WELL DONE!
  • Lastly, thanks to the group of committed parents in our school kitchen today serving up warm, pumpkin soup for us all - greatly appreciated (oh! And the fresh fruit too!).

Thanks for your continued support.

Have a safe and restful weekend!
