Careers Corner News

Careers Corner News!

We are very proud of our year 12’s students! They have endured all sorts of hardships in their final year of secondary schooling.  The graduates of 2021 will be known as one of the most resilient cohorts of year 12 students!  We wish you all the best of luck and remind you that HPSC Careers Staff will continue to support you in 2022.

Remember...

Students who do best at university or TAFE are not necessarily those with the highest ATARs but those with persistence, determination, organisational and self-management skills that are also assertive in asking for help.  Make sure you choose a course you will enjoy and are interested in; otherwise, you may experience problems with motivation.  Form friendship groups with other students so you can be active in groups that discuss work and share ideas.  Students that are engaged in learning communities and networks have a more positive university experience.

All Year 12 students have been sent a Compass letter that includes the following documents:

  • School Leaver Toolkit
  • Staff Timetable for COP
  • COP Information Sheet
  • COP Contact Details for Uni/TAFE
  • Scholarships Information Document
  • YouTube links for VTAC
  •

Please download these documents for reference over the coming weeks!

This is a crucial time in applying for courses – it is very important that students have preferences that are realistic and in the right order.

What do Registered Nurses do?

Registered Nurses (RN’s) support doctors and patients by providing high-level care to patients in hospitals, aged care and other facilities, even within the community. If you’re caring, compassionate as well as level-headed and practical, then nursing could be a rewarding career to consider.

  • An effective communicator with patients and colleagues, both orally and written
  • Attention to detail is essential, as is the ability to prioritise, be a critical thinker, and have the willingness to keep learning

The job:

  • Observe and record patients progress, perform diagnostic tests and administer medication
  • Reassure and explain to patients and their families the treatments and procedures
  • Coordinate activities that could help patients to feel better, working with other health care professionals to achieve the best outcome for individuals
  • Prepare patients for further examinations, testing or surgery, assist in operations and post-operative care
  • Maintain and update patient and hospital records accurately and promptly
  • Help or supervise other nursing staff

Lifestyle Impact: High

  • Registered Nurse salary (average) *$77,920 per year (Source: indeed.com) *Salary varies between states, level of experience, part / full time hours, there is also potential for overtime.
  • Future career growth: Strong (Source: joboutlook.gov.au)
  • Working from home is not an option, levels of responsibility and stress may be high, shift work could also be consideration. There are opportunities for promotion, career changes, flexible hours and choice of location.

Registered Nurses are most in demand in these locations:

Australia wide, with the majority of jobs advertised in NSW, VIC and QLD.

As an RN you could probably choose any location in Australia to look for work as they are so in demand, there could also be overseas opportunities.  Nurses work in a huge variety of settings, from hospitals (in every department), schools and GP surgeries, to community services, the tourism industry and more.
