Dads' Club Update

Mark Alexander

Hey HPS dads,

1)    All HPS dads are invited to our next event of the year on Thursday June 22 with our own HPS dad Adrian Brown, Producer of The Front Bar and Director of the critically acclaimed Sports Documentary series ‘The Test’ that gets behind the scenes of the Australian Cricket team.

For more than two decades, Adrian has been telling stories on Australian television. Working alongside the nation’s biggest comedy, entertainment and sporting stars, Adrian has produced many of Australia’s best-loved productions, including The Front Bar, Before The Game & The Project. Adrian’s work as a director, produced under his production company Whooshka Media, has been informed by his lifelong obsession with sport, culminating in a run of critically-acclaimed sporting documentaries including ‘Outsiders’ and ‘The Test’ on Amazon Prime. Please join us for an intimate (Chatham House Rule) conversation with Adrian where we will discuss his successes, challenges and some funny stories along his journey on the inside of sport in a Q&A format. The venue is still tbd but more than likely at the RSL.

WHEN: Thursday 22nd June, 6.30pm for 7pm Q&A

WHERE: tbd but more than likely Hampton RSL (on Holyrood)

WHO: All dads welcome to this event

DRINKS: You can buy drinks at 1970’s prices

FOOD: There is good food at the RSL

RSVP: Please email Mark on markalex@hotmail.com.

2)     The Push Up Challenge (3,144 push ups in June for mental well-being!!!)

It’s that time of the year again for the annual Push-Up Challenge! 3,144 push ups in June to raise awareness for mental wellbeing and suicide prevention in Australia. Join the HPS team and challenge yourself to 3,144 push ups from June 1 - June 23. If your shoulders are dodgy, you can also do squats, sit-ups, chin-ups etc. It's a great way to stay fit or get fit in the middle of winter!

You can log your reps on a super simple app and the more public your push-ups, the more questions you will get and the more awareness you will bring to the number of suicides we have annually in Australia (3,144 in 2021). You can also buy yourself a cool t-shirt and raise even more awareness! Too many people are committing suicide and it’s preventable!

Jump onto this page (https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/fundraisers/hamptonprimaryschool), register and join the Hampton Primary School community. Within that community, you can get going, raise some $$ and get pushing! If you want, you can also form your own team within the community and compete against your mates.

3)      Dads-Kids Camp x 2 (Oct 27-29 & Nov 24-Nov 26, 2023)

The camp was booked out last year so we are running two this year (for HPS dads and their HPS girls and boys) at Forest Edge Camp in Neerim. More info to follow in July.

4)    HPS Dads' Club Cycling group

WHO: If you’re a keen road cyclist or looking to get into it - why not join the Hampton Dads' Cycling Club with over 30 dads!

HOW: To join, simply text message Rob Schmitt on 0416 174 650 and he’ll add you to the WhatsApp Group.

There is also a strava group at https://www.strava.com/clubs/HDCC

WHEN: 7am every Sunday, you can ride with either the social or fast group - distances vary between 30kms and 75kms. Rides tend to end with coffee at Paperboy. There is also a monthly Gran Fondo (100km ride), usually held on the first Sunday of the month.

Why a Dads' Club? What the research says.

  • Suicide is the number 1 killer of men aged between 15 and 44 and 3 out of every 4 suicides are men[1][1].
  • 1 in 2 Australian males have had a mental health problem at some point in their lives[1][2]
  • 70% of guys are there for their mates BUT only 48% would reach out to a mate for help[1][3]
  • “Harden up! Take a cup of cement!” Maybe this isn’t healthy as new research suggests some men will take their own life rather than appearing weak and asking for help[1][4]
  • Blokes, let’s connect, join in, talk, ask, listen, encourage action, check in with a mate whilst have a cracking time!
