Elizabeth Quay and The WA Museum Boola Bardi

Year 10 Humanities and Social Sciences Geography Excursions

What do you get when you take Year 10 students to Elizabeth Quay and The WA Museum Boola Bardi? An awesome learning experience! Over the days of the 16th, 17th and 18th of May, our Geography students explored the challenges faced to wellbeing for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians living in Perth.

Their fieldwork assessment took students to Elizabeth Quay to meet artist and Wadjuk man, Justin Martin, owner and operator of Djurandi Dreaming, who discussed the challenges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have had with achieving well-being, first contact with the Europeans and how important connection with Country is to well-being. From there students visited the Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn exhibit at the WA Museum Boola Bardi, where they explored the positive and negative sides of colonisation as well as truth-telling and stories of resilience.

After lunch, Advanced classes continued onto East Perth, where students conducted a field transect of change from Wellington Square to Claisebrook and were amazed at the change that occurs in this area of East Perth, influencing both positive and negative well-being. Thank you to the Humanities and Social Sciences team for assisting with the delivery of the fieldwork, including Mr Walley-Stack, Mrs Rogers, Ms Marsh and Ms Fitzgerald.
