Vinnies

Last week we delivered an incredible bounty of food donations in overflowing baskets to Vinnies in Springvale. Thanks to Ms. Cannon for organising Vinnie's representatives to attend the mass, then the delivery of the food. Thanks also to Ms. Diep and her Year 7 class for loading the bus. In particular thanks to Lucy, Alix, Alice, Jazmin, Matilda, and Zoe for their muscle work in unpacking the bus at St Joseph's.

Below are some photos of Vinnie's shelves showing how desperately low they have got in supplies.

Arts and Celebrations Committee

Jospehines Lau and Wilson - our Arts and Celebration leaders in conjunction with all other year-level leaders in this committee raised over $400 with their Mothers’ Day Flower stall. They work so cooperatively as a team and put in a tremendous effort at lunch.  I’m sure there will have been many happy Mothers and Mother figures who received the beautiful carnations on the day.

Wellsprings

Wellsprings is bubbling along nicely for our volunteers. We have done all sorts of work at the Dandenong premises from gardening, cooking, language and computer classes to administrative work. Here are a couple of reflections from our students.

“Today at Wellsprings we taught the ladies how to write and read numbers, identifying fruits and veggies, prepositions and naming different colours. The ladies are all so kind and welcoming, and are also very very funny. This experience was a rewarding opportunity to interact with other women and help them learn things they don’t already know”. – Halissa and Natalie

At Wellsprings we helped out some women in computer classes, we taught them how to create PowerPoints and improve their typing. Everyone was so kind and keen to learn new things.

It was a great opportunity to teach the women at Wellsprings how to fluently speak and write English more. We hope our lesson will be useful when conversing with others in their everyday life.

Building Bridges

Year 10 Building Bridges students visited the King David School this week. With great hospitality, they both fed us and informed us of the Jewish faith and how they practice it at their school. We split into groups and had three sessions looking at the various scriptures, garments, and religious objects of significance. The highlight was an incredible, precious parchment scroll of the Torah on two wooden spindles. Their students spoke so impressively and were so engaging with their presentations. Thanks to Geoff and the staff and students at King David.

Global Academic Challenge

Killester had 41 students across Year 8 participate in the The Global Academic Challenge. It is a competition from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) for students in Year 4, 6 and 8 in Mathematics, Reading and Science.

The Challenge gives students the opportunity to sit questions of an international standard, to compare themselves against global benchmarks and to stretch themselves beyond the curriculum.

Results will be released at the end of June.
