Lacrosse the Board

Lacrosse Club presents the scoop on this week's leadership report.

Dear Families,

As week 4 of Term 2 comes to end, we can celebrate and reflect on the great time we shared together and look to the exciting future events. We must begin with acknowledging the huge success of the PFA’s outdoor cinema night. La Noche was filled with great food, great atmosphere and a movie that continues to bring copious amounts of joy. This was an incredible event that keeps getting better! A huge congratulations and thank you to the PFA for organising such an impressive evening.

At Newlands, we have a strong focus on providing Authentic Leadership opportunities at our school, encouraging our students to voice their opinions and have agency in their learning to improve our school. This week was our student congregation, where all the school leaders got to sit down and share their focuses/goals for the year. It was inspiring to hear all the students consider the role, have a goal and discuss the steps they were going to take to ensure that their goals make a difference to Newlands Primary School.  On Wednesday night, two of our school leaders (Woody and Oliver) presented to the school council. They shared their goals and gave the school council an insight into what is happening at Newlands, what they have enjoyed and what they would like to see next. The school maintains a strong focus on providing opportunities for our students to problem solve, make decisions and develop a sense of responsibility for our school.

On Wednesday, Newlands Primary School celebrated IDAHOBIT Day. It was a pure delight to see our students dressed up and engaging in a range of learning experiences that celebrate diversity and support the inclusion of all people. Students were watching videos, reading articles, making movies and posters and were involved in role plays throughout the day. Thank you to Sonya and all the teachers who contributed to such an important day.

Marianne Turner and Gary Bonar from Monash University visited Newlands this week. Marianne is a Bilingual Education and TESOL Associate Professor and Author of ‘Multilingualism as a Resource and a Goal’. It was a pleasure to share our journey with her, our challenges and our goals through our next phase of becoming an exemplar Bilingual School. We are very excited to say that Marianne will become a part of our team in the future working with leadership and staff.

On Sunday the 28th of May, 9:00am-12:30pm, we will be hosting our first Working Bee for the year. With a promise of a Newlands 'Value Sandwich' Free POP UP, who is going to say 'no' to that? We are looking for painters, carpenters, gardeners – and/or anyone with the drive to make our school look prettier and safer. PS – If that isn’t you, you need to read it again. We can’t wait to see you all there! Thanks Buildings and Grounds Committee.

Our active Sub Committees keep providing opportunities! This time our Spanish Sub Committee is providing the opportunity that may provide some delight: A $50 dollar 3-course meal at Neruda Café in Brunswick. Our Sub Committee are committed in supporting our families in developing their Spanish Language skills, this time it will be through food and drinks! Need an extra incentive, no children allowed! Muy Bien. If you are free at 7pm on the 1st of June and don’t want to miss the opportunity, please follow the link below!

I would like to congratulate both Graeme & Jess who have been appointed by a panel as Acting Assistant Principals in Term 2 & 3. They are both instrumental in ensuring that Newlands is a safe learning environment for our students and working with our dedicated staff in ensuring that the school delivers a high-quality education program to our students. This opportunity will continue to develop their leadership skills and develop a new skill set.

Time to pull the diary out and get ready for our next Open Day of Learning! If it is half as exciting as the poster, you know you are in for a good time.

One final message, we have noticed an increase in phone calls to the office, that have the answers right here in the newsletter! We ask you to check the calendar, dates and SENTRAL prior to contacting the office! Our incredible office staff are always happy to help, but if it’s been communicated, we will be directing you back to read the newsletter!

Have a great weekend!

Luke
