School Community News

Student Achievements

We have many students achieving and doing amazing things! If you have student news that you would like to share with our whole school community, please feel free to contact Simone in the Office.

Judo

We are pleased to let you know that we have two students, Sophie (Year 5) and Sebastian (Year 5) have both passed a Judo practical and knowledge test called a grading at the Judokan Judo Club. This is no easy task and requires a great deal of practice.  The grade is awarded by the presentation of a coloured Judo belt. Junior Judo belts are in varying colours signifying age and expertise.

Both Sophie and Sebastian have been awarded a Junior Yellow belt. Congratulations Sophie and Sebastian!

Ice Skating

In November last year, Flynn (Year 5) attended the Australian Nationals for figure skating in Brisbane where he won first place. This win qualified Flynn to participate in the Oceania International Figure Skating competition held in Auckland in May this year where he won the Gold medal.

Congratulations Flynn!

Student Representative Council News

This Term the Student Representative Council is hosting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. This will be our main fundraising event for Term 2.

Did you know that 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. We want to change that, and we need your help to do it. So, on the 14th of June we will be holding Ormond Primary School’s Biggest Morning Tea. We will celebrate this day by wearing yellow, bringing something yummy and having our morning tea all together on the oval, to show our support. Please follow this link to donate towards such a worthy cause, https://www.biggestmorningtea.com.au/fundraisers/ormondprimary

Your donations go towards,

  • Research. Investment in research has helped increase cancer survival rates from 49% in the 1980s to 69% today. Because of research, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. And every day, brilliant Australian researchers are working to unlock more of cancer’s secrets.
  • Support. Almost 150,000 Australians are diagnosed with cancer every year. That’s 150,000 families who need practical information and support. Our cancer nurses and trained volunteers on 13 11 20 help them understand treatment options, prepare for medical appointments, and organise legal and financial advice. All these services are made possible with your donations.
  • Prevention. One third of all cancers can be prevented, with cancer prevention being one of the most effective ways we can create a cancer free future. Funds raised from Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea are helping to empower Australians to reduce their cancer risk by funding world-leading prevention campaigns. This includes encouraging participation in cancer screening programs and providing education on healthy lifestyle choices through programs like SunSmart.

The Ormond Primary Student Representative Council

Education Sub-Committee

Dear OPS Community,

What was that I heard you ask? "How can I get involved in making Ormond Primary School an even more engaging and stimulating place to learn and thrive?" So glad you asked! The Education Sub-Committee is where you can bring your passion for our school community, your skills in collaboration and your drive to make things happen instead of just talking about it.  In 2023 our major focus will be:

  1. Developing an OPS Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
  2. Exploring how we can empower all members of the OPS community to be welcoming, inclusive and supportive of the Neurodivergent students who bring so much to our school.
  3. Developing learning opportunities for the wider community to engage with what happens in the classroom, such as showcasing the AMAZING work our students and teachers do. Our results are great, we need to celebrate this!!

We will be meeting on the Tuesday in the week before School Council at 6pm – 7pm in the conference room at OPS. The meeting dates are as follows:

  • 13th June
  • 11th July
  • 8th August
  • 5th September
  • 10th October
  • 7th November
  • 5th December

If you are keen to be a part of this productive and vibrant committee, please respond to this email. I look forward to working with you this year.
