Sports Report

Sarah Byron

Firstly I would like to thank a number of staff who have assisted me with sports since the start of Term 2.  I have been very busy either running or assisting on six consecutive camps over five weeks.  Subsequently this meant relying on the generosity of staff to ensure teams were picked, trained and transported to their events. Thank you to Clinton Thomas  for taking on the Football, Rachael Rowe for the Cross Country, Mel Keath the Athletics and Netball, Nyah Bester for stepping in at the last minute to coach the girls at the GWR football this week,  as well as the many other helpers. It is great to see the Monivae spirit not only in the students but the staff as they lead by example.

GD Athletics

On a wet and windy Friday late last Term, eighty students headed to Portland to contest the Glenelg Division athletics.

After many years of trekking to Casterton for the athletics, a new venue has been sourced. Subsequently another School and Little Athletics club took on the huge task of running the event. A few hiccups with the computers and the weather meant all events unfortunately could not be completed on the day so early in Term 2 we headed back down to complete the Athletics.

It was great to see the support over both days for our fellow team mates as they competed, and those that filled in due to absences.

Congratulations to our Age champions

Ruby Cleaver 14yo girls

Bailey Cooper 18yo boys

The huge effort by all over the two days saw Monivae win the Girls and Boys shields as well as the overall competition. A huge thank you to the staff and students for all their hard work over the two days and leading up to the event.

GD Cross Country

The team of fifty two Cross Country team members headed down to Portland to compete on a new track for this event.  Unfortunately our team was smaller than usual due to the Year 10 camp, a number of other school commitments for the senior students, along with a few injuries.

However with a strong team on the ground, Monivae placed third with Bayview, Portland taking out the Win.

Congratulations to those who came first in their age groups,

Josh Grant 17Yr  boys

Matilda Mason 15Yr girls

Of the fifty two competing at GD level, thirty two of these students are now going on to compete at the Regional level on Monday 29th May.  These Students have received an email and parents have been sent permission forms on PAM.

I wish them all the very best next week.

School Netball Championships

Over the past couple of weeks the Netball staff, Ms. Melody Keath, Mrs. Belinda Carroll and Ms. Nyah Bester have been busy organising try-outs and trainings for the upcoming competitions in July. We are fortunate enough to have seven teams going this year. In the girls competition we have two Year 11/12 teams,  two Year 9/10, two Year 7/8 and

one Boys Year 7/8 team. I look forward to watching these teams compete in July.

GD Basketball

Information will soon be emailed out to students regarding nominations for the GD Basketball Competition held early Term 3.

Clay Target Shooting

Towards the end of Term 2 we will be starting our Clay target shooting competition.  This will start with the Safety information session before progressing into training. More information will be sent out in early June.

GWR Girls Football

On the 23rd of May, a group of twenty two eager Year 9 and 10 girls travelled to Warrnambool for the GWR Girls’ Football competition. Our first game for the day was against Emmanuel College.  This proved to be tough competition and unfortunately our girls came out second-best. As the day progressed the girls improved tremendously, coming away with two wins over Trinity College, Colac and Horsham College. This placed the girls in 3rd place for the day which is a tremendous achievement for Monivae’s first appearance in the Girls GWR competition.

Year 9/10 Boys Football

On Wednesday the 24th of May, Monivae had twenty four very keen Year 9 and 10 footballers who headed off to Pedrina Park for the Bob Templeton Shield Football Carnival. The day consisted of three short matches in a round-robin-styled format, with each match being 2 x 15 minute halves.

Our first game of the day was against Portland Secondary College, and the boys started with a dominant win of 10 goals 10 behinds to 1 behind. The goal scorers for this game were Angus Impey, Matthew Calvert and Tom Gordon with 3 each, whilst Hunter Van Someren kicked 1. Our second game was against Baimbridge College where we came out and produced our strongest showing finishing up Winners with 18 goals 11 behinds to no score. The goal scorers in this game were Angus Impey, Hugh Fitzgerald and Harlie Manson, all with 3 each, Karatau Keightley and Zac Elliot with 2 each, whilst Frank Gill, Grady Bell, Hayden Phillips, Koby Slattery-Fisher and Ryley Munro all kicked 1 each. Our third game of the day, against Hamilton and Alexandra College, proved to be another dominant win of 16 goals 2 behinds to no score. The goal scorers for the match were Angus Impey with 4, Tom Gordon with 3, Connor Stephens, Hugh Fitzgerald, Matthew Calvert and Zac Elliot all with 2 each, and Harlie Manson with one.

Across the day we had a significant amount of fantastic individual performers, with every single player contributing well at different stages throughout the three matches. This was extremely pleasing to see. Some of the better players overall included Archie Page, who dominated throughout the midfield and across half-back all day, Hugh Fitzgerald who was also great in our the midfield most of the day whilst managing 5 goals across the three matches, Tom Gordon was very lively and dangerous up forward kicking 6 goals across the day whilst also playing a terrific role throughout the midfield at different stages.  Angus Impey was our most dangerous forward of the day with a total of 10 goals across the three games, whilst Brodie Phillips was rock solid down back all day and orchestrated our offensively minded defensive. Thanks to all who were involved in making this such a successful and enjoyable day, including those injured and unavailable boys who came along and assisted with different jobs.

Year 11/12 Boys Football

The senior boys football team competed in the annual competition at Pedrina Park on Tuesday 16th May.

This year we entered two teams, I must admit this was really pleasing and it’s great to see that the students at Monivae want to represent their school.

We played in a round robin tournament against Baimbridge Collge, The Hamilton and Alexandra College and Portland College.

Monivae Red were able to win one of their 3 matches and Monivae Blue were the overall winners not losing a game with the closest margin being 4 goals against Hamilton College.

Scores in each game for Monivae Blue were,

Monivae Blue9.5
Monivae Red0.3

Goals – Andrews 3, Cooper 2, Calvert 2, Andrews 2

Monivae Blue8.1
THAC4.3

 Goals – Daffy 3, Andrews 3, Gibbs 2

Monivae Blue11.7
Portland2.1

Goals – Calvert, Mailes, Hardy 2, Daffy 2, Cullinane, Jennings 2, Porter, Andrews

Monivae Blue10.3
Baimbridge1.3

Goals – White, Rhook, Calvert, Andrews, Hardy 3, Phillips, Matushka, Marti

Better Players:

Over the course of the 4 games the following students displayed consistent high standards of play

Charlie Field – Charlie was mainly on the wing and linked up beautifully. He gained numerous possessions in the mid field setting up scoring opportunities.

Rhys Daffy – Rhys was electric across half forward using his agility to break away from congestions and open up the field.

Deacon White – Our 2023 Captain did a fair bit of grunt work in the center.

Sam Cullinane – Really stepped up in the game against College when the pressure was on.

The two teams will now merge into one squad of 21 players to go to GWR in Ballarat. A competition we have not taken part in for several years.
