Moonlit Sanctuary Fodder Garden at Bayside
Justin Mason, Sharon Power and I recently visited the Moonlit Sanctuary to meet with the projects manager (Geoff) and head Koala carer (Caitlin). We are now in the process of planting trees along the Peninsula Link boundary fence, which will then be gradually coppiced (progressive harvesting) to feed the Koalas at Moonlit Sanctuary. Caitlin will also be able to safely harvest small branches off our existing North Campus Stringybark gums to feed the Koalas. This will reduce the need for the carers to stop in dangerous roadside conditions to harvest branches. Thanks so much to the school leadership team for running with this exciting community partnership.
VCE VM Industry Winter Café
The amazing Ulli Austermann has been working with some of our Year 12 VCE VM students (Katie Ellam, Ruby Lines-Perrier, Sasha Johnstone and Jordyn McKee) to develop a new winter menu for the TSC Café each Thursday. The new menu has been enormously successful with all of the senior students and the team has been really busy in the first few weeks of term. A massive thanks goes to Ulli, who buys all of the food and helps coordinate cooking and service. The Café is open each Thursday from recess through to the end of lunch.
Year 10 Industry
The amazing Justin Mason and Ben Kelly have been working with VM Year 10 students to build an animal nursery next to the Prep, Grade 1 & 2 classrooms. The students learned about concreting and are now building the frame for the nursery. The Year 10’s are learning real life technical skills, which they can take with them once they leave school. Thanks also goes to David Goschnick, who came up with the concept and the design of the nursery.
Year 11 & 12 VCE VM Campground Construction
James Siede, Justin Mason and I have been working with Year 11 & 12 VCE VM students to reconstruct the North Campus campground area. The students have been learning basic landscaping and construction skills whilst building an area for many younger students to appreciate. We will expand this concept to run day camps for Primary students during next term.
Year 11 Active Volunteering First Aid
Our Certificate II in Active Volunteering students completed their first aid course as a part of their course. Our trainer (Laura) did a sensational job and was really impressed with the students as they worked through how to help and support people when they’re injured or not breathing.
Certificate II in Active Volunteering Community Garden Work
The Year 11 VCE VM class has been working on the development of a community garden at Peninsula City Church’s Pantry Plus program. The students have been turning over the existing garden beds, weeding and will start building new beds in the next two weeks. These gardens will allow Pantry Plus clients to grow their own nutritious food and the students are also putting together a recipe book to accompany the food grown in this new initiative.
