Primary School

Cross Country
What a great effort by students during the Whole School Cross Country on Tuesday 8 May when the weather was damp and the track a touch muddy! Thank you to the parents who came and braved the elements to cheer and support the students. It was wonderful to see the way students tried their best with some older primary students encouraging the younger students as they ran.
Congratulations to the Believers house that ran and scored the highest amount of points at the Cross Country for years Prep-6. The final scores were Believers (green) - 161 points, Conquerors (yellow) - 153 points and Overcomers (red) - 141 points.
Primary District Cross Country
64 students from Years 3-6 will be going on to compete at the Primary District Cross Country event on Friday 19 May at Woodleigh Senior School. Please ensure you give permission for your child to attend through Sentral.
Prep Readiness Session
On Thursday 18 May, Mrs Donna Martin and Miss Fiona Mitchell will be running a Prep Readiness Session in G16 from 2-3pm. They will be presenting some information that may help prepare children for Prep in the 6 months prior to starting school.
Mothers’ Day Stall
It is hoped that the Mothers all had a very happy day last Sunday. The Primary students appeared to enjoy selecting gifts from the Mothers Day stall. Thank you to Mrs Lis O’Brien and her team of helpers, including some junior secondary students, who helped to facilitate the set up and running of the stall.
Brainstorm Productions
All of the Primary students attended an incursion last Wednesday when Brainstorm Productions presented ‘Zanna and the Lost Code’. It covered topics such as cyberbullying, bullying and values. The students were really engaged in the story presented by the two actors and they had the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the performance.
Competitions in Year 5/6
Selected students have been and are participating in a number of competitions at the moment. A Writing Competition, conducted by the Whitlam Institute, was entered by six students. Samples of their writing, on the topic ‘What Matters’, are displayed on the wall in G-Block.
Nine students have been involved in the Global Academic Challenge in Reading, Science and Mathematics run by ACER. Eight students are currently working on problems for the Australian Mathematics Challenge run by the Australian Mathematics Trust. It is wonderful to see students trying really hard to extend and apply their learning in different situations.

1/2J Update: Weather
Our class has been learning about the weather. We have talked about our favourite weather, whether it is kicking autumn leaves or diving into a cool swimming pool on a hot day. We have listed different types of weather and researched the difference between weather and climate.

3/4 Excursion to Cook's Cottage
On Friday the 5th of May all of the 3/4 classes went on a big excursion to Cook’s Cottage. We went on two separate buses, one for Year 3 and one for Year 4.
After the one hour bus ride we found a sunny spot to sit and eat our snack. After we ate our lunch we got split into two groups, there was group number one and group number two. I got put into group number one with my friend Liora.
Our group got to hear a story about James Cook. After the story we got to do a race to empty our chamber pot (that’s a toilet under your bed). Then we did a treasure hunt about landmarks around the park.
Finally, we had our snack and then we went back on the bus to school. I enjoyed the treasure hunt the most because we got to find out some of the history of the gardens.
Thanks for reading!

As soon as I arrived at school every Year 3 and 4 student in the area was buzzing with excitement. Today we were going to visit Cook’s Cottage in the Fitzroy gardens. When the bell rang the teachers led us to the buses. Very soon we had climbed on the buses and the drivers headed off to the Fitzroy Gardens. When we got there all the 3/4s sat down and ate our delicious morning tea. After that, the teachers split us in groups and everyone soon went to their activities.
My group went to Cook’s Cottage first. The leader explained that we would need to pick a card and answer the question on the card, by going in the house to find it. Then, we went and sat on a mat and a leader talked all about Cook’s voyages.
After that, our group went on a scavenger hunt. Every two people was handed a clipboard and we had to answer the questions on the chart. It was really fun! My partner and I got all the answers right! Then, we all climbed on the buses and headed back to school. I enjoyed the scavenger hunt the best!

AFL Incursion
There was a bit of excitement last week in all of our Year 5/6 PE classes. Students were given the opportunity to learn from some of the best up and coming footballers on the peninsula. Ella Dempster (Number 39 for Casey VFLW) and Finn Emile-Brennan (Number 69 for Casey VFL) ran fun AFL Play sessions at school to help our students better understand some of the basics of Australian Football. They also shed light on what it’s like to train to become an AFL W or AFL footballer, as well as what it means to be an elite athlete.
Celebrating Mother’s Day at PenCC
Something a bit different for the fortnightly newsletter! Peninsula City Church celebrated Mother’s Day a bit differently this year!
The pastor invited a few of our own (Bayside's) Mothers up on stage to celebrate and embarrass them as they sang some well known karaoke songs with some wigs and dress ups. Both Mrs Karina Hooper and Mrs Shelly Cooper starred and have since quit working for Bayside to follow their dreams!!! [T&Cs-: we can’t confirm or deny whether this is actually the case].
