Indonesian Independence Day

On Wednesday 17th August, students from across the school came together to celebrate Indonesia's 77th Independence Day.  We started the day with an assembly where we watched a school on the island of Komodo do a flag raising ceremony and we sang the Indonesian national anthem "Indonesia Raya".

Some brave students from G2 and G2 performed a Saman dance, a traditional dance from the Provence of Ache. This dance is all about unity.

As a whole school, we participated in a dance from Bali. This dance was about togetherness.

Throughout the day students had opportunities to participate in traditional Independence Day games which held significant meanings. Tug of war or "tarik tembang" was popular. This game encouraged participants to work as a team. Another favourite was the "lomba makan krupuk" or cracker eating game. This game reminds Indonesian people of the time they were under Dutch and Japanese occupation and had very little to eat. It is a reminder to be grateful for their independence.   We had lots of fun, learning and celebrating!
