The Cup Rescue Program at Kilvington
Lucas Collins, Head of Junior School
We are excited to be able to share that a sustainability initiative championed by our Junior School student leaders is now in place at our School.
The Cup Rescue program, supported by 7-Eleven, has been created with the goal of saving millions of takeaway hot drink cups from landfill each year. Instead of cups going to landfill, this program sends cups and lids to upcycling facilities (via 7-Eleven stores). You can find more information about the program in the below attachment.
We now have three stations located across the School - at the moment these are in the Junior School kitchen, the Treehouse and the Sport Centre Staffroom.
We’re encouraging all students and staff who enjoy a takeaway beverage to use these stations, instead of our general landfill bins, for their drink cups and lids.
What a fantastic sustainability initiative from our Junior School!
'Go Girl, Go for IT' Technology Conference
Joanne Low, Media and Digital Technologies Teacher
Recently, our Years 5 and 6 girls and a select group of girls from Years 7 to 10 attended the technology conference, 'Go Girl, Go for IT'.
The one-day event focused on opening up the students’ perspectives on what the technology field looks like.
Students attended a trade show where they spoke to people in industry and different representatives from universities on what a future in technology looks like.
They underwent a series of puzzles and challenges at the trade show and won a number of prizes. They also attended different workshops and listened to a panel of women speak about their experiences in the world of IT.
The conference gave the students an opportunity to open up to career possibilities in a variety of fields including analysis, user design, development and data science. Students really enjoyed learning and hearing from different companies and taking part in the workshops.
Addison Hammond, Year 9
It was so exciting to experience 'Go Girls' in person, after having participating in it online during lockdowns.
We had the opportunity of hearing women talk about their jobs and experiences in the tech world. We were able to ask lots of questions and learn about the range of jobs available in the tech sector.
Some of my favourite things to see at the expo were: the 3D printer at work, the robot that could follow us around, and the robot, twice as tall as a human, wave at us!
Thanks for an amazing day! I know we all really enjoyed it and were grateful to be given the opportunity to attend!
Junior School Tournament of Minds Team first place award
Tania Whitehead, Dean of Junior School Operations
Congratulations to our Junior School Tournament of Minds (TOMs) Team who were awarded first place at the Metropolitan Central Finals held at Deakin University, Burwood.
TOMs, a problem-solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years, aims to help students cultivate a diverse set of skills - from enterprise, time management and creativity to discipline, teamwork and more!
The Kilvington TOMs Team consisted of the following students: Nirvi Bijwal, Riya Konkepudi, Milta Lu, Marcus McGloughlin Ginger Shen, Akshayini Pritam Wadhwani and Myrah Bhargava.
THE CHALLENGE
At the Tournament, the Kilvington Team selected the Social Sciences Long-Term Challenge, which asked students to explore social issues and aspects of human society.
Students were given six weeks to work on creating a solution to this challenge, working effectively as a team to research and think of a creative way to effectively communicate their ideas within a range of pre-defined parameters.
On the day of the Tournament, the Team also participated in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge. This challenge required a rapid interchange of ideas, the ability to think creatively and well-developed group cooperation skills.
More details of how the students addressed the Challenge can be found in the below attachment.
NEXT UP FOR THE TOMs TEAM
The Kilvington TOMs Team will now represent the Metro Central Region in the Junior Social Sciences section at the State Finals to be held at La Trobe University, Bundoora on Sunday 11 September.
We are very proud of our TOMs Team and wish them every success for the State Finals. We would also like to congratulate them on the enormous dedication and effort they have put in so far!
Special thanks to staff members Angela Sharp and Margie Luxford who acted as facilitators and mentors for the team.
